Fridays were the only day of the week when his father got off from work early, and the only day of the week when he picked Jungkook up from school.
Jungkook sat on the steps in front of the school and waited. His father was unusually late today.
It had been several days since he had last seen Taehyung, and he had accepted the fact that he would probably never see the redhead ever again. The camera slung around his neck, the wooden sandals, the long fingers, he would never see any of that again.
He leaned back and closed his eyes.
"Taking a nap?"
His eyes shot open. The voice was familiar. Very familiar.
Butterflies erupted in his stomach and Jungkook felt the beginnings of a small smile creep onto his lips. "No, just waiting."
"Waiting for what?"
"For my dad to pick me up."
"Oh," Taehyung sat down beside him, thighs brushing together. "I didn't know we went to the same school."
Maybe it's fate, Jungkook thought.
"Me either."
"What grade are you in?"
"Tenth, what about you?"
"Eleventh," Taehyung nudged him gently. "So I'm older than you." He stuck his tongue out.
There was a pause of silence between the two. It was comfortable, and Jungkook leaned his head gently onto Taehyung's shoulder. It felt like the right thing to do.
He had never... felt like this with anyone. He had never felt so comfortable in the presence of a near stranger. Taehyung made him feel safe. Like it didn't matter that the world was made of darkness. Taehyung was bright enough to light the way.
"Hey," Taehyung said softly, "wanna hang out tomorrow?"
Time froze for Jungkook, and he watched as a bee fluttered through the air, landing on a purple flower just a few feet away. Why was this beautiful angel asking someone as useless as Jungkook to hang out? Couldn't he see Jungkook was just a waste of space?
"I..." Jungkook swallowed for air. "I don't know. If you want."
"Of course I do, silly! That's why I asked!"
Let me have this, Jungkook thought. He glanced at the sky from beneath his bangs. Let me have a piece of the sun. Let me have the happiness that Taehyung seems so full of.
"Ok, let's hang out tomorrow."
