They ended up at a place called Eat Jin, the only restaurant around that was still serving breakfast at noon. It was pretty and smelled like roses, and there were mocha brown coffee tables scattered about that gave the place a comfortable glow to it.
"Taehyung, hey," a man dressed in a pressed uniform approached them the second they sat down. He had brown hair and broad shoulders and a gentle smile on his face that gave Jungkook good vibes. "I was wondering when my favorite customer would show up. What can I get you?"
"Buttermilk pancakes please," Taehyung piped up, not even glancing at the menu. "And..." he turned to Jungkook, "what do you want?"
"Um, actually I'm not hungry. Can I just have something to drink?"
"Oh c'mon, you have to get something. Jin makes the best food."
"No really I-"
"He'll have the rainbow french toast," Taehyung interrupted him, beaming so widely that Jungkook didn't have the heart to disagree.
The man, who Jungkook assumed was Jin, took down the order and left with the promise to return quickly.
"Taehyung, I didn't even bring money with me," Jungkook said, a worried crease appearing between his brows as he frowned in distress.
"Oh, don't worry 'bout that. Jin never charges me."
"But it doesn't feel right not paying for a meal. And besides, I don't even know Jin."
Taehyung reached over the table and placed a slim finger against Jungkook's lips. "Hush, bun. Don't worry so much. Jin is a really cool dude that I've known most of my life. Trust me when I tell you he wouldn't want any of my friends to pay for his food."
Bun. The word sent a shiver through Jungkook and he found himself nodding shyly.
They made small talk as they waited for their food to arrive, and time slipped by as Jungkook found himself enjoying Taehyung's company.
Taehyung had two younger siblings and liked the color orange. He wanted to be a professional photographer when he grew older, but currently, he worked part-time as a cashier at a thrift shop.
"Oh," Taehyung added as he chewed on his pancakes, "I forgot to add that I'm gay."
Jungkook almost choked on his french toast. Taehyung was so... was so open. Jungkook had never met someone who was so upfront about their sexuality. Jungkook himself was gay as well, but he didn't like to tell people. He preferred to keep it to himself.
"Oh," Jungkook said lamely, "that's cool."
"Are you?" Taehyung asked, looking at him with inquisitive eyes.
"Um," Jungkook fiddled with his fork. "I don't really like to tell people about my sexuality." He paused and took a deep breath, "but yeah, I am."
A soft crinkle appeared at the corners of Taehyung's eyes as he frowned. "Jungkook, please don't feel the need to tell me just because I asked. I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable." He reached across the table and took Jungkook's hands in his own. "But... that's really cool. That you're gay, it's cool."
Taehyung's grip was firm. His hands were warm and... was he flirting? Is that what this was? Jungkook's mind was fuzzy. No one had ever flirted with him before. No one had ever reached across a coffee table to grasp his hands in an embrace that made his heart quicken. No one had ever looked at him the way Taehyung was looking at him right now.
Jungkook didn't know what to say. His cheeks were red and his eyes were wide, looking at anything but the beautiful boy sitting across from him. He couldn't breathe.
"Can I have your number?"
He felt a booming feeling in his chest, an explosion of fireworks, as the question slipped from Taehyung's lips.
Jungkook found himself releasing a breath he hadn't realized he had been holding in. His fingers twitched in Taehyung's grasp, and he found himself opening his mouth and answering "yes."
