Red. It was a favourite colour of his. In fact, he incorporated the colour into his clothing whenever he could. Red gloves, red scarves, red hoods.
He hated when his parents tainted it; staining the colour with terrible memories he couldn't shake.
Times like now.
Keith's hands rolled into pale fists, nails digging into his palms as another agonised scream echoed around the chamber. It was the sound only a man in great pain could make. He tried not the flinch as he heard the harsh sound of leather whipping skin.
Show no weakness.
Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad if his parents had somebody else do it. It would give him the smallest of comforts to know that his parents had some shred of humanity in them, or at least, any care for it. But no, they preferred to do most things themselves. Even the torture of captured enemies of the Crown. That way they ensured it was done and nothing had been missed.
But they made them watch.
Their own children were required to stand silently and witness the suffering of their people.
Keith fought the bile clawing its way up his throat as he recalled another thing he'd been told.
Show no mercy.
To prove that though they were children, they were no pushovers and when one of them ascended the crown, the Kogane family's rule would be no less strict.
Rule breaking is prohibited.
Keith found no joy in what he was seeing. It only proved to make him feel sick to the stomach and prompted his hatred of his parents to fester and grow.
Until one night Keith could take it no more.
It was time for things to change.
