The Maze Runner (Newt x Reader Fanfic)

Chapter 3

Kaya woke up to the sound of someone knocking on the door. She got up, careful not to wake Newt, and opened it up, only to find Minho.

"Come on, it's your big day. Meet you at the entrance to the Maze in five. Be ready to run like your life depends on it. Because it does." And just like that, he left. Kaya went downstairs quietly and approached her box. She went through the clothes and found a blue shirt and black pants, along with dark blue running shoes and fingerless black leather gloves. She had a belt that hooked around her waist and leg that she decided to use to hold her dagger and machete. When she got her hair into a high ponytail and completely geared up into the equipment, she jogged outside towards the Maze doors. Minho was there waiting for her.

"Dang, you look good. You've still got two minutes left. Ready for your first day?" Kaya nodded, and they both started running into the ivy-covered walls of the Maze.

They ran for about an hour, right, left, straight, left, left, right, straight, and so on. They stopped when Minho's watch went off.

"Water break." Minho looked exhausted already, meanwhile Kaya looked ready to run a marathon. "How are you not tired? We just ran, like, 8 miles."

Kaya shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know. Conditioning, I guess."

"You must've had a lot of conditioning then" Minho said, joking. Kaya smiled and looked around. All there was to see was ivy and walls. Suddenly, there was a distant sound of whirring and clicking. It drew closer, making Minho stand up, alarmed. He grabbed Kaya by the wrist and started running. They ran as far away from the sounds as they could, but it seemed to be everywhere. Minho stopped abruptly.

"Minho, what—"

"Shh..." Minho looked around, and started running again, pulling Kaya along with him. They turned a corner, ony to find the most hideous monster Kaya had ever seen. She screamed, making the thing charge. She turned and ran before Minho could say anything. She ran faster and faster until the sounds of metal against stone was far off in the distance. But she had lost Minho, and now she was all alone.

Kaya remained frozen until she heard more clicking, coming from both directions. There was no ivy on the walls nearby. She was trapped. Instinctively, she grabbed her knife and machete, ready to fight. It was suicide, but at least she'd hopefully be giving Minho time to escape. As the creatures came around the corner, she charged.

Newt was working at the gardens, waiting anxiously for Kaya to get back. It was almost time for them to be back, so he didn't know what the delay was. Newt figured he shouldn't worry about it. He trusted Minho, and he knew he would keep her safe. But something just didn't feel right. He felt like he should be out there, looking for her if she was hurt. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the Runners come back in. Newt ran over to them, looking for Kaya. There was no sign of her. He started to worry, and ran over to Minho.

"Where is she?"

"What?" Minho looked at him with a confused look.

Kaya. Did she make it back? Where is she?" Newt had started getting really worried. If she was still out there... no. He couldn't bear it. Not Kaya.

"She's at the Med Jacks." Minho couldn't meet Newt's eyes. Not after what had happened in the Maze. Newt ran to the Med Jacks, praying that she was okay. He opened the door, only to find Clint.

"Where's Kaya?"

"You don't wanna know." Clint looked him in the eyes. A scream came from the third room down the hall. Newt ran over to it, but was held back. "Don't go in there. Trust me. Just step away from the door."
