“Ursa? Like the girl from the story?”

“Yes, Allia. You see, it’s not just a story. It’s true.”

Lia’s eyes widened, and she leaned closer to Ursa. “What happened?” Ursa smiled.

“When I got home after Ikem proposed, I was so happy. But it wasn’t meant to be. My mother told me that there was a guest in the garden, someone to see me. When I got there, I discovered my father with Firelord Azulon. The Firelord told me that I was to marry his son, Prince Ozai. I didn’t want to, but I had a duty to my people. Marrying the Prince would bring great honor to my family. So I left. It broke Ikem’s heart, and mine.”

Lia’s eyes filled with tears, and impulsively she hugged Ursa. But the former Fire Nation Princess just smiled and patted Lia’s head before resuming her story. “It wasn’t all bad. My new husband was a cruel and evil man, but he gave me two beautiful children, who I loved very much. Their names were Zuko and Azula.”

Lia grinned. “Oh, I know him! He’s the Firelord and he bends light, like me!” Ursa laughed softly. “Yes, he does. Marrying Ozai also gave me a family--and a brother. His name was Iroh. You know him, too, don’t you?”

“Mmmhmm! Uncle Iroh! He’s my Daddy’s uncle, too.” Lia frowned slightly, sensing that she was missing something.

“Yes, Iroh was Ozai’s brother. Iroh loves my son as much as I do.” Ursa smiled at the girl, watching as Lia’s eyes widened. “So that means… Firelord Zuko is my Daddy? Uncle never told me THAT!”

“Yes, Allia. And I am your Grandmother.”

Lia looked at Ursa with amazement, then hugged her again. “I’m glad. I like you.”

            Ursa laughed.

Finally Lia pulled back, looking up at her grandmother with curiosity. “So what happened after that?”

“After that? I’ll tell you that tomorrow.”

**__**

            I don’t think.

            I must find Lia.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had a mantra. But there was never a mantra as important as this one.

            I must find Lia.

I move across the water as fast as I can--I have been running for hours. For days. I stop only long enough to form an ice boat that carries me down the river while I sleep for an hour or two.

But I can never sleep long.

Then I am up again, racing along the river, heading south. In a few more hours, I will enter the sea. It’s only a day’s travel from there to Senlin Harbor.

             I must find Lia.

The mantra keeps me alive. It echoes in my head whether I’m awake or asleep.

There is nothing else except this knowledge.

            I haven’t cried.

You only cry for something you’ve lost.

            But I haven’t lost her.

            I will not lose her.

            I must find Lia.

            I WILL find Lia.

I keep running. I will run forever if it means finding my daughter. If it means bringing her home.

No matter that I don’t really have a home anymore.

            Lia is my home.
