"Ok kids, now listen up. During this trip I am in charge" Savanah announced loudly to our group, "and you are MY responsibility, so I will be running things MY way." She paused for a second and then as if adding a second thought she advised the group that "Anybody who has a problem with that may aswell just turn back right now and return home to mommy and daddy". Bored out of my witts, I zoned out for the rest of her speech . It however, was close to impossible to go without noticing that she emphasized "my" and "I". In my dazed state of mind I decided that she must just be full of herself.
I looked down at my 5'1 bestfriend, who was standing next to me, and smiled a miscevous smile. Although we had come a few minutes late and missed the supervisor introductions our absences seemed to have gone unnoticed.
I heard Savanahs demanding someone's attention and snapped out of my daydream.
"Hey, you!" she called out a second time, this time grabbing the added attention of the people who had been zoning out and the few immature ones who were wasting their time laughing at eachothers passport ID photos.
"Hey! Oompah loompah, tall chick!" I froze and slowly raised my gaze from where it had been on the floor to look at her face. Her stern face focused on mine as she waved her arms infront of her body obviously trying to catch somebody's eye.
'Oh crap, oh crap. Please don't be calling us, please dont be calling us' I chanted in my head hoping that maybe there was another tall and short girl standing behind us but when I turned and found no one there, my face fell. Well there goes that hope, I thought. Trying to look innocent, I peered up at her through my eyelashes.
"Yes?" I squeaked, slightly intimidated. Not because she was scary looking or old, but rather because she was quite a pretty young blonde with an evil gleem in her eyes.
" You were late" she paused "I don't DO late". She slowly walked towards us, "You remember my warning, right?"
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Sophie nod hesitantly and mentally I face palmed myself. She should have acted as if she had no idea what Savanah was talking about!
"Wonderful" she said as she stared us down while taking a step closer.
Then there was a ding and the voice of a friendly airport worker rang from speakers located all around the terminal, " Flight 207 from Toronto International to Heathrow Airport is now boarding."
I let out a breath I didn't even realize I was holding and turned to grab the handle of my suitcase when I felt someone's warm breath on my cheek.
"I may not have time to deal with this right now but don't you dare think, even for a second, that I'll forget about your tardiness" Savanah whispered in my ear before turning away and shouting
"Alright class of 2013, let's get this show on the road!" towards my peers. I scoffed and rolled my eyes as she walked away, 'how cliche' I thought.
"She's not always that bad .. But I'll warn you, you should be kind of worried about what she's planning to do to embarrass you. The last girl had to eat a dozen worms on live tv" a masculine voice said from behind me. I slowly turned and then gawked at the boy that stood before me. He was gorgeous, and tall. Very tall. I wondered how tall he must be. I was 5'8 and a half and I considered myself tall .. He must be what? 6'1? He chuckled.
"Hey, I'm Giant" he said as he held out his hand for me to shake it. I looked over to where a few seconds ago Sophie stood but noticed her spot empty. I sighed realizing that she had probably already ditched me to flirt with the nearest cute boy. I turned my attention back to 'Giant' and hesitantly shook his hand. Who names their kid Giant? I asked myself. He chuckled once more, only this time I felt as though he was laughing at some sort of inside joke.
"She named me Giant after she first met me, isn't she clever, tall chick?" he asked me while making reference to what Savanah called me. I laughed under my breath finally understanding that 'Giant' was Savanahs nickname for him just as 'tall chick" was her nickname for me.
"Oh yeah, she's a genius" I muttered sarcasically before continuing on with my train of thought, "You know, it doesn't really suit you" I commented and turned to my suitcases trying to grab a handle in each hand "the nickname, I mean" I said, clarifying my thought.
He shrugged his shoulders, "Guess I should be glad it didn't stick then".
With that he grabbed one of my overpacked suitcases in one hand, and his own in the other and started off towards the check in desk line, forcing me to follow him. It was only then that I noticed he was wearing the same navy blue shirt with the Student Experiences logo printed on the back as all of the other supervisors. Was he a supervisor like Savanah? I was few metres behind him already so I decided I had to run to catch up and ask.
"Hey, Giant!" I called from a distance, hoping I could still get his attention.
He paused and shot me a questioning look, "I thought you said it didn't stick?"
"Well it doesn't really," I blushed slightly embarrassed that I stooped down to Savanahs level "but I don't really know your name so it was the only thing I could do to get your attention." I explained, forgetting that I was about him to ask him an important question.
He smiled and held his hand out again "Tyler."
We shook hands again, "Natalie.", I re-introduced myself.
"Ouuuh, You see, now I understand why Savanah called you 'tall chick' ... Its just ... Well how do i put this gently? It just sounds better." he teased. I stood there pretending to be hurt for a second before I whacking him as hard as I could in the arm. I may have just met him but thats definitely not how it felt. We were going to be really good friends, I could tell.
"Oww!" he yelled like a baby, "what was that for?!"
"You know very well what that was for!" I shot back.
He smiled, "I was just teasing yah".
"Me too," I admitted, smiling back.
"Next!" An unfamiliar voice called and I jumped back in surprise. Oh! We were at the front of the line already?
I watched as Tyler confidently walked up to the lady behind the counter and shot her his dazzling smile
"Good Afternoon M'am" was all I heard him say before being called up to the next Availible clerk.
As the clerk weighed my luggage bags, I felt a warm breath on my cheek for the second time that day. The only difference was that this time the person had gently placed their hands on my hips aswell before quietly speaking into my right ear, "You're wrong," the male voice paused, "You didn't have to call my name to get my attention. You had it the second I spotted you walking through that door with your two large, overly packed cases." I shut my eyes, relishing in the heat that his body was giving off. When I opened them back up the heat was gone and he was walking off. Well there go all my hopes of making Tyler a good friend This was going to be one hell of a trip.
