The stars twinkle with laughter as they look upon your misery

Sometimes Shiru wondered why Itachi stuck to her side.

She wasn't fun and she didn't do much but watch others.

She never understood why Itachi forced her to walk around with him, she was content with staying in the shadows, the light hurt her eyes and moving around was always such a drag.

Shiru would never admit that she was glad to have someone like Itachi by her side, it made life more... enjoyable? Yeah, enjoyable.

But they weren't friends. They were acquaintances and nothing more.

-

Training, Shiru realized, was the bane of her existence. If you didn't count Itachi that is.

Her parents weren't strict in other's eyes, but for a Nara, they were as strict as one could get. Go train for an hour before you lay down, go play shogi with your father, help me cook, go tend to the gardens. It was all so troublesome.

Sometimes Shiru would just hang around Itachi to get away from all the chores, even if it gave him the idea that she liked to spend time with him.

She didn't actually, he was just more bearable then her parents were.

-

Itachi invites her over for dinner a year into academy and she shrugs and agrees. Her parents won't worry, they'll know she's somewhere with Itachi.

She walks home with him, chatting quietly about what they had learned.

She doesn't know what to expect as she approaches the Uchiha clan. Oddly enough she feels like frowning when she isn't greeted with warm smiles. It's odd, she shouldn't be expecting warm smiles from people she's never met.

Itachi warns Shiru about his cousin and Shiru shrugs, she's oddly excited to meet Itachi's cousin, but why is she excited? She's never been excited for things like that before.

She shrugs off the feeling and plants her feet firmly on the ground, even as the door opens and she has the urge to run in and shout, "I'm home!"

Because it isn't her home, so why was she so compelled to yell out that phrase? And why here? She never yelled 'I'm home' at her actual house so then why was she so compelled?

She walked in after Itachi, placed her shoes off on the mat and followed him inside as he gave a call of, "I'm home!"

She watches as a woman with hair as black as her own walks in with a smile, "Itachi, you brought your friend!"

The woman turns to Shiru with a large smile on her face, "I'm Mikoto, Itachi's mother!"

Shiru smiles a closed eye smile and bows, "Nice to meet you Mikoto-San."

Mikoto's smile widens and she gives a squeal, "So polite!"

Itachi stares at Shiru with a look of shock and pride, as his mother disappears he leans closer to her, "So you do know how to be polite-"

"Shut up Uchiha."

Itachi smiles a small smile cheerfully as Shiru grumbles at him.

They were good friends even if Shiru wouldn't admit to it.

-

The air was awkward and five year old Shiru was becoming bored. She was sitting stiffly waiting for the head of the house and Itachi's cousin to make it back to the house so they could start eating. That and Itachi had no idea how to have fun.
