I walked into the hotel and I saw her sitting on a red couch looking at a magazine.  Her long caramel locks were chopped off.  Her hair was now cut a little shorter at least up to her shoulders.  She was wearing square Ray Bans with red frames.  She was wearing a black romper with a little lace detail on the shorts. And to top it all off black strappy sandals. She looked different, perfect actually. I walked over to her and she stood up.  She wrapped her arms around me in a warm embrace.  We pulled apart and her smile was still as bright as ever.

“Nice glasses,” I smiled as we walked out of the hotel.

“Ha yeah I got new frames.  They reminded me of a simpler time.”

I honestly didn’t know what that meant.  Our childhood was good but are things really that bad for her now?

We got into the car and things were still a little awkward. “So you cut your hair?” I smiled and started the car and we made our way to a place where I know Scarlett would like.

“Yeah it’s easier to manage when its shorter,” she explained.  “So you speak with an American accent now?” she giggled.

“Just when I’m nervous,” I laughed as I drove.  We were going to be in the car for about forty-five minutes because L.A traffic sucks.

“Little Marcel is now nervous about seeing me?”

I didn’t speak.  I blushed a little and tried to focus on the road. A million things were going through my head.  I wanted to ask her questions, personal questions, awkward questions, anything.  Who was this girl who stumbled back into my life?

45 minutes later

I parked the car and her eyes got big.  When I told her I was moving to the states she was envious that I would live near a beach.  I could tell that she was excited although she didn’t run or do something awkward and loud.  She just came around the car, met my eyes, than held my hand.  Scarlett was quiet.  When we were walking I heard a giggle escape her lips.

We sat down on the dusty sand.  The sun was setting and the water was calm.  I didn’t know where to start.  Unfortunately everything was awkward.

“Why did you drop out of Oxford?”

“Um…It just wasn’t me I guess.  I don’t want people telling me who to be anymore.  Everyone expects me to be something I’m not.  I want to finally be able to make my own decisions.  I can’t possibly live a life that isn’t everything I hoped,” she exclaimed.

“Wow. So do you know what you’re going to do in your life?” I asked trying to be as subtle as possible.

“I like to write.  Actually when I was in Oxford that’s I did.  Everyone has a story and I would love to give everyone a chance to tell theirs,” Scarlett said so peacefully.

“Maybe you could write ours,” I said trying not to sound cheesy.

“Ha- that would be a funny book. So have you spoken to Harry and Emilie at all?” Scarlett asked.

“Yeah Harry was in L.A today and we had a meeting today.  Kind of weird though he was one of my best friends and now he’s-“

“He’s not what you expected,” Scarlett said finishing my sentence.

“Yeah…”

We were sitting there no body was talking.  So relaxing.  “Scarlett why don’t you just stay here? I mean you not doing anything necessarily in England.  And you could be here every single day.”

“I would love to, but I have unfinished business and I really need to be with my mum and brothers right now.”

This made me jump. “Scar is everything okay? Do you need me to come with you to England?”

“No- no it’s okay.  I love visiting here although England is my home.  I’m not a traveler like you and Emilie.  I can’t go somewhere and start a new life.  Believe me I wish I was.”

“Have you spoken to Emilie in a while?” I asked.

“I have she lives with me.  We share a flat. She just got back from Canada.”

“Did she really go to Canada? That’s cool. Is she okay? I want to see her.”

“Ha- You might see her soon.  Not sure yet,” she said very calmly while playing with the sand.

“That’s great we all need to hang out again,” I exclaimed.

“Yeah…yeah we do,” Scarlett said again very calmly.

The sun was at the perfect orange and yellow.  Everything was relaxing.  I don’t think she notices how beautiful she is.  Even with shorter hair.  No matter what.  It’s not what you look like that makes you beautiful.  Its what’s in your heart.  I guess if Scarlett could teach me anything that’s what it would be.  She never needs the grandest things she just needs to be with the people that makes her happy.  I took off my glasses then I took off hers very gently.  She turned her head, let out a soft giggle, and I brought her head to mine.  Our lips touched. And just like when we were teenagers I got a rush up my spine.  She put her hand on my neck. And my hand went down to her waist.  Our kissing started to get more intense. I pulled her in more close and her fingers were roaming my hair.  We pulled apart.  She laughed louder she seemed happier.  She got up and started running.  I got up and ran after her.  We chased each other around the empty beach then made our way towards the car.

I woke up that morning and there she was.  She was laying on her side and her hand was under her head.  She was breathing slowly and quietly.  Everything was calm.  I will miss her no matter what.

She was slowly waking up.  She turned over and her eyes were bright and big.

“Hey Marcel,” Scarlett said in her low morning voice.

“Yes Scarlett?”

“ I’m in love with you.”
