I was speechless. Hearing those words again was amazing. I stared at her for a few seconds then pressed our lips together. She brought her head up a little then pulled apart. We looked at each other for a little while and she smiled at me.
I got off the bed and grabbed two tee shirts from my chest which was in the corner of my room. One was grey and the other was white. I threw the white v- neck to Scarlett and I pulled over the other one. “So would you like to go out to town, text Harry and see what he is up to? We can do anything you want.”
“Oh those are all good options. Do you just want to go to Starbucks then text Harry? I really want to see him. “
“Of course, come on lets go,” I said being very rambunctious.
“Marcel I need to change and shower.”
“Ugh fine, if you say so,” I pouted. Scarlett threw on her romper from the day before and we left the apartment.
“So what do you want to listen to?” I asked.
“Okay yes I know I am a grown adult, but I am obsessed with every Tangled song.”
“Ha that is not a surprise,” I laughed as I plugged in her phone.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Scar you’re the only one I know that goes to the cinema at midnight to see a Disney movie when it first comes out,” I stated.
“That was one time and it was for Toy Story 3. And don’t pretend like you didn’t cry, it was amazing.”
The music played and Scarlett was belting out the lyrics of the song When Will my Life Begin. I could barely focus on the road because I was laughing so hard. She was adding hand gestures. We finally arrived at the hotel and I was in tears. Before she got out we went over the plan.
“Okay so it will only take me about fifteen minutes to get ready. You think you can wait for me till then?”
“Yes I think I can wait.”
She hesitated for a moment “I really wanted to say some rude cleaver comeback and that didn’t happen.”
I smiled and she left. I looked at her as she was going into the hotel and she looked really skinny. I didn’t notice it before because I was in so much shock that she was here. I remember her being tiny, just something about this new her wasn’t right. I glanced at my phone and texted Harry asking him if he wanted to meet up for Starbuck or anything and he agreed. Finally things were sort of normal in a weird way.
30 minutes later
Instead of hanging out in the actual restaurant we decided to meet at Harry’s house so we could have a genuine conversation. All three of us were sitting on his big couch in the middle of his flat. He really has done well for himself. The apartment was quite empty except for a couch, pillows, a few pictures, and his laptop. Scarlett was sipping very slowly her tall caramel macchiato. Everything was awkward.
“Your hair it’s insane,” Scarlett said touching Harry’s hair.
“Yeah, well it’s not quite long enough,” he said.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about it seems pretty long to me,” She said.
“Your hair used to be like eight feet,” he snapped playfully.
“Well that was the old me and this is the new me. That me lasted for eighteen years let’s see how long this one lasts,” she said under her breath.
“What-?” I asked then Harry cut me off.
“So England not working out for you Rapunzel?”
“No, I still love it. I just want to see something new. Do a little traveling.” Scarlett stated. “You know who is there though? Emilie.”
“Yeah? How is that young wiper snapper?” Harry asked.
“Emilie? She’s good. A little bored. I really feel bad for her. She just sits in her room all day and looks out her window. She had this boyfriend that she really liked and that didn’t work out. She’s kind of lost and it’s just hard right now. We make things’ work though. For now at least,” Scarlett stated.
“For now?” I asked concerned.
She was smiling and when she looked at me her face became slightly upset. “Nothing its fine. Everything is okay,” she said reassuringly.
I shook my head not exactly believing her, but I know I shouldn’t try and pry it out because then she would build up more walls and it could ruin everything. Scarlett and Harry went back to their conversation about Emilie.
“When was the last time you spoke to her?” Scarlett asked.
“A few days after we lost X Factor. It was really emotional and I don’t know I needed to talk to her. Although by then she was dating someone and things were awkward so I just stopped calling.”
“You really made her sad. She was miserable. You told her you were going to call and visit more. Why did you give up?” Scarlett asked.
“I don’t know. I know that’s a crappy responds but it’s true. I guess my biggest regret about leaving was not keeping in touch.”
Scarlett smiled and said “I guess it’s okay for now,” she laughed.
After a while of chatting, catching up, and being completely crazy Scarlett and I left and headed on our own journey. We were sat in my car and Scarlett was rummaging through her bag. She pulled out mascara tubes, lipsticks, a phone charger, even a water bottle. The last thing she took out was a little medicine container. She threw everything else back in the bag except for the water bottle. She then popped in her mouth a few pills. And began scrolling through her phone.
“What was that for?” I asked trying to sound casual.
“Oh nothing. I just got sick and the doctor prescribed some meds. It’s fine.
I decided to take her word for it and continued to drive down the streets of LA. Sometimes she makes me nervous. What if everything’s not okay? She would tell me right? I can’t believe she has to go soon. My best friend will soon be back on the other end of the world and I can’t change that. Sometimes I wonder if being with my dad really was the best decision.
