The stairs creak under our feet as we run up to my room. By the time Sonya and I make it to my room, we're panting and nearly sweating. What can I say?.. My new house is big.
"So? What's your plan for Will?" Sonya asks as she jumps onto my bed. "And uhh.. Do you have anything to eat?.. I'm kinda hungry." She asks sheepishly and as if on cue, a huge rumble comes from her stomach. I laugh as her face turns red as she crosses her arms over her stomach and turns away.
"Yeah sure totally. Knowing my mom, she's probably already got a 5-course meal lined up for us downstairs." I joke and motion to Sonya to come downstairs withme. Sure enough, as soon as we step outside the door of my room, a heavenly smell wafts up to greet our noses.
"OHH my GOD what is that smell?!" Sonya practically drools and I can't help but giggle a bit because if this was a cartoon, Sonya would have her tongue hanging out like a dog and there would be huge hearts in her eyes.
"Oh, that's just my mom's 'after-school snack'!" I smile at Sonya. "Do you wanna go eat something? It smells like it's just about ready." Sure enough, as soon as I finished my sentence, we heard mom calling us down.
"Hey girls? Snack is ready! Wash your hands and come down please!" Mom's voice rang through the house.
"Ok mom!" I yelled back. "Come on!" I motioned at Sonya to follow me into the long empty hallway with a grin.

After our "snack" of chicken, beans, potatoes, gravy, and pudding, Sonya and I retreat to my room, with our stomach so full we can barely breathe.
"Uhhhnnnghhh..." Sonya falls onto my bed and moans holding her stomach. "I didn't know I coould eat that much but it was just. So. Good!"
I flop down beside Sonya, feeling as though I had just eaten at a buffet. "I know how you feel.. I would've asked you to explore the house with me but I just feel so.. Heavy." I groan and close my eyes.
"Excuse me, what?!" Sonya flips onto her side to stare at me, her full stomach temporarily forgotten. "Talia Truro.. Please do NOT tell me you haven't explored this house yet." Sonya stares at me and I squirm uncomfortably under her sharp gaze.
"Uhh.. Umm, well you see.." I search my brain for a possible reason of why I haven't yet explored every inch of my new huuuge house. Come to think of it, it did sound pretty stupid. I mean, what kind of an interesting person doesn't immmediately examine every room, every crevice when they move?? So yeah. No excuse.
"Jeez, T. Ok well I'm not missing this soo.. Let's go." Fully recovered from her momentary immobility, Sonya jumps off my bed and grabs my wrist, pulling me out behind her into the hallway. In all the time I had entered and left my room, I had never really noticed how many rooms there were. Just where we're standing we can count about 12 rooms with 6 on each side, and then the hallway curves into a corner. As Sonya turns into the second room (since mine is the first), I remember I saw a light in one of the rooms as I was going to breakfast the other day.
"Wait, Sonya! I think Connie's room is up here! We can totally pull a prank on her!" I grin evilly at Sonya who laughs.
"Geez wouldn't want to have you as a sister!" She teases me. "Well show me which one is her room!" She pushes me into the hall, and I'm surprised at her eagerness to cause some mischief. Sonya looks back at me and sees the surprise on my face.
"I don't have siblings.." Sonya explains. "So, when my friends want to do something crazy.. Let's just say I take every chance I get. Now come!" I laugh at the impatience in her voice and follow her back into the hall.
"Soo.. I think it was that one." I point Sonya towards the room that had been lit up a couple nights ago. It way the second last door on the left before the carpet curved off. As we got closer to the door, I noticed something about it.
"Is that Sharpie??" Sonya exclaimed, wrinkling her nose. In the top left corner of the door, it looks like a child took a thin Sharpie and had tried to draw 3 straight parallel diagonal lines. The lines are shaky and uneeven in length, and if they would've been carved into the painted wood, I would brush it off to be cat marks or something, but as stupid as it sounds, there was something slightly unsettling about this weird sign that had (as far as I could tell) just appeared on the door. And when Sonya goes to see if she can wipe it away, she pulls away quickly.
"OUuchhh!" Sonya yelps in surprise. "It.. It burnt me!! What the hell?!" Sure enough, when I look at the 3 fingers touched the lines, there're red marks and her middle finger even has a tiny blister growing on it. But.. How could this happen?? It's a door, for Christ' sakes!
"Oh my God! Are you ok?? Do you need a bandaid or something??" I frantically try to make sure she's ok.
"No, no it's fine.. I was just.. Surprised that's all. I've gotten worse injuries on my curling iron.. Trust me. How could that happen though??" She stares hard at the door as if the answers she's looking for are going to appear on the otherwise clean door. "Do you think Connie might've burnt it into the wood or something??" Sonya turns to me, a look of bewilderment on her face.
"I don't know.. Maybe.. I haven't really known her to do anything dangerous or rebelliuos in that way. But I goes it's possible. Now that's she's hurt you she definitely deserves a little bit of a prank." I smirk at Sonya and I watch as an impish glint takes over the confusion in her brown eyes.
"Totally. After you!" Sonya makes sweeping gestures towards the door. I gingerly grip the faded metal of the doorknob, half worried I was going to be burnt like Sonya. Once the cool metal showed no signs of burning me, I grabbed the knob with more confidence and twisted it to open the door. Of course it isn't going to burn you! It's just a silly doorknob. How could it burn you?? It's not like it's magical or anything, I thought to myself and laughed. Then I heard Sonya gasp beside me and as I raised my eyes I felt chills down run down my spine.
