Chapter 16: The Result
Hours go by and it's finally time for Zoey's doctor's appointment. She still hasn't told anyone yet. She wanted to wait until we went to the doctor and they confirmed her tests. After I get ready, I drive over to pick up Zoey. I didn't tell Mom where we were going. All she knows is that we're doing our regular weekend hangout. When I arrive, she's already waiting outside on her front porch step. When she gets in, I can feel the nerves radiating off of her. Her breathing is a bit rapid and her body seems tense. This is her first time really confronting her potential pregnancy. She never brings it up unless I ask her if she's doing okay. I give her some water that I packed before I left. She looks at me gratefully and takes it.
"How are you?" I ask before pulling off. She takes a sip of her water and exhales.
"Okay. Mom thinks we're going to the mall." She sighs. "I don't know what to do, Andi."
"Well, you know you have options," I say.
"No, there's only one option. You know my mom's super conservative."
"There's always adoption," I add. I say this, but I know that this isn't an option for Zoey either. She's way too compassionate. As soon as she sees her baby, she'll get attached. I know Nate wouldn't want to give it up either. That is if he wants to keep it.
"Yeah. I'll have to talk to Nate about it. He'll want to be part of this." I speed up and we continue on to the doctor's office in silence.
After talking to the receptionist, Zoey and I sit in the waiting area in silence. There are a few other pregnant women waiting as well. A few of them look like they're on their last trimester. There are posters on the wall about birth control pills and having safe sex and all that. Some are just regular G.Y.N things saying how women can keep their "lady parts" clean. Some little kids are running around and their mother doesn't seem to be able to keep them in control. She's trying to distract them with her phone and the other little toys that she has, but it doesn't seem to be working. I come out of my thoughts when Zoey nudges me.
"Come on, Andi, they called me." We get up and follow the nurse to the room. When we get there Zoey sits on the bed. "Dr. Kim will be here shortly." The nurse says before leaving and closing the door. I decide to turn to Zoey instead.
"Everything's going to be fine, Zoey," I reassure her.
"Yeah. I hope so." She starts fidgeting with her fingers.
"You know what you're gonna ask her?" I question.
"I guess." She answers. I can tell she's a bit too nervous to speak. I understand exactly how she feels. Sometimes I get way too nervous that I don't want anyone to talk to me or ask me questions. Besides, I know Zoey better than anyone. I decide to keep quiet and leave her to her thoughts until finally, a lady walks in the room. She looks Asian and her hair is in a ponytail. She looks likes she's in her early forties, but she looks like she's in her thirties. She's wearing a button down shirt and some slacks along with a lab coat.
Time seemed to drag on as we slowly went through the questioning/checkup process until finally, Dr.Kim leaves to go access the urine samples Zoey gave them earlier. Zoey lays her head on my shoulder as we wait in the room alone, and I rub circles on her back in reassurance. Suddenly the door opens up and Zoey stiffens.
"I have your results." Dr. Kim announces after closing the door behind her. Zoey sits up broadening her shoulders as she waits for the news. I rest my hand on hers and she relaxes again. Dr. Kim looks over the paper. "You're not pregnant. " She reveals with a smile and Zoey's body slumps against the back of the chair in relief.
