When my eyes opened, I couldn't make out what had happened. The last thing I remember was being hit by a car on my way to the new home. I sat up and looked around my head hurt like crazy as this whited world spun around me.
"Welcome young one." I looked around for the voice but saw no source. I stayed quiet, not wanted to draw attention.
"There is no reason to be afraid, my name is Reccer and I will be helping you through the world of Herlmis." I was still confused as to where the voice was coming from.
"Please show yourself." my voice shook and I felt irritated, I pushed it back as I do with every emotion, it just felt. . . different.
"I have no form, I am only a helper that has been assigned to you." No form? I stood up and stumbled forwards falling on my stomach but miraculously being able to keep my head from hitting whatever this ground was. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine." I sat back up but didn't try to stand up again. I was a bit embarrassed, but I pushed it back.
"My apologies for not being able to assist you." I only shook my head.
"Tell me, how did I get here?" I looked around, still trying to find the source of the voice.
"Well, Herlmis is the land of the Reincarnated, so you must have died in a different world." I nodded but was dumbstruck and unable to conceal my confusion. "As I will be aiding you throughout your new life, why don't we start with choosing what you wish to be?"
"What?" I looked up and found several floating objects. "What are those?"
"Each and every one of these portrays to your past life and has some importance to what you will be when you reincarnate. I can't tell you much else as I have no way to know what they mean to you." I look at the objects and memories start to drift into my head as I look at them.
There was a bracelet made of tough strings that I had made with one of the few people I connected with, we had gone camping with their family and sat by the huge bonfire cooking fish and singing songs while the two of us braided the strings together into a long braid before cutting it in half and burning the ends so they wouldn't fray. I had thrown it out about four years ago when I stopped caring when I realized that any connection I made was bound to break.
The next was a fishing knife that was given to me when I was 14. That family had been the most promising for a long-term relationship, but it was cut short by the mother dying of cancer and the father committing suicide because the mother was the only one keeping him happy. I have no idea what happened to that knife, I must have left it at their house.
The next was a pair of fingerless gloves that I had bought myself after receiving my first ever paycheck. I was so happy that I had finally been able to get something for myself. They were still in my little suitcase, they hadn't been worn in a long time.
The one next to the gloves melted my heart, it was a shoulder bag made of leather and brass. It was a gift from my parents, they had given it to them to give to me when I was old enough. I remember clutching onto it as if I could somehow reconnect with my true family and that by doing so would end the cycle of loneliness.
There were three others that I strongly rejected and didn't even look into them, but the last one, the last one had no memories, it just floated there, slowly turning. It had a sense of new beginning, I could start over. I looked back at the leather bag and then back at the blade in front of me.
I took a heavy breath and reached forward, I grasped the scythe in my hands and held it to my chest.
"Very well, now, choose your new name." I thought about it. I rather liked my name, but there was something missing.
"Elm Agrippa." I said confidently.
"Very well, Elm Agrippa, before I reincarnate you, I will teach you a little of how Herlmis works." I sat down with my scythe laying across my lap. "In Herlmis there are skills and status that show your improvements and vitals. Status also shows you your name, race, age, class, level, and abilities." This new world sounded a lot like a video game, but I was interested and it's not like I had a choice. "There are many classes and each one is ranked from F, E, D, C, B, A, S, SS, and SSS being the highest. The monsters and beasts are also ranked in the same way." I like the sound of that, it will make it easy to know the threat level. "Lastly, what you need to know is the currency of Herlmis, there is Copper, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. 100 C = 1 S, 100 S = 1 G, and 100 G = 1 P. Are there any questions you may have before I reincarnate you?" I think I have one.
"How do I access status?"
"You must only speak "status" and the window will appear in front of you. You will have access to everything there." I nodded, so this was almost exactly like a video game, except for the fact that it's not.
"Thank you, Reccer, I am ready to start my new life." excitement built up inside me and I tried to squash it back down when I was suddenly falling, the ground got closer to me and I thought for sure that I was going to die yet again. That never happened and I was slowed and my bare feet touched the ground harmlessly.
"Well, that was cool. Now. . ." I looked around and took in the sight of lush forest around me, it was beautiful, the smell was so fresh and welcoming, unlike the polluted air of the States. I took a deep breath and started to laugh, I hadn't laughed in years and yet I couldn't contain it. I couldn't believe it, I had a chance to start over, I had a chance to rediscover what it meant to be alive.
