The dismissal bell rang through the soon-to-be-busy halls of an unknown local Ohio high school. School's out for the weekend; Fridays will always be better than Sundays. Nearly everyone in the room jumped up in unison immediately and ran eagerly out the door.
"Tyler. Stay here a minute."
The boy stopped in his tracks, turning and walking back to Mr. Bourbaki's desk.
Tyler was on the taller side; his thin frame enhanced by his tight black skinny jeans he seemed to wear religiously, followed by a beat up pair of red vans. And to top it off, a matching black and baggy long sleeve t-shirt. He had "I just woke up" sort of hair, but "I didn't sleep very much" eyes.
"Y-yes Mr. B?" Tyler anxiously forced out, knowing he was more than likely in trouble again.
"You didn't do your homework again."
"Sorry,-"
"I typically have been letting you off the hook here and there, but you haven't turned anything in all week. Are you alright? Is there something going on? Do I have to get your parents involved?"
"No sir. I promise I'll get everything done. I'm fine. Really. Just haven't been sleeping well."
"Alright Joseph. I'm here if you need anything."
"Yeah. Thanks. Just tired."
Tyler headed out the classroom door, muttering under his breath.
"So tired."
He pulled his tangled earbuds from his left pocket and began at the little knots, clearly frustrated.
Music on, shitty school off.
He walked out of the building heading to his house, about three and a half blocks away.
