Kaden was sitting up, looking around warily. She had tear stains under her eyes. She looked a million times better, and her eyes had stopped glowing.
"Look, I'm sorry, I- "He began.
She shot up, and hugged him.
"I thought you weren't coming back." She sobbed. Everett was shocked.
"I-I'm sorry. I met Adron and-"
"Adron?" She went as pale as a ghost. "What-what is he.....what is he doing here?" She stammered.
"He said he was 'scouting the enemy'."
"No. That's not the reason. Nothing would tear him from Kamere, even if it included gaining power. No. He's after something else... something big," She shuddered. "What happened earlier? I remember walking in front of the city gates, and then I started sweating, and the next moment I was here."
"I-I honestly don't know. Your eyes, though. They were bright red, like they were fire. People started screaming, and then you fainted, and we went into the city."
She stared into the distance.
"Like fire? Why?"
"Someone said you had mind magic, or something"
"Mind-mind magic? No no no no no. No. Leran is still alive, he's the leader of Vermilion, and no one else can have mind magic until he..." She looked back to the distance and bit her lip.
"Someone else said you were possessed,"
She sighed. "You'll come to know those two as the same thing,"
A scream filled the air. Everett and Kaden scrambled to their feet, and ran into the clearing at the center of town. The smell of smoke choked the oxygen out of his lungs. Kaden pulled her shirt over her nose, and ran forwards.
"Kaden, no!" He screamed in desperation, tearing after her. Tears burned in his eyes, ashes flying everywhere. The deep horn blew.
"It's the school!" Someone yelled. People were stumbling away from it. Trucks pulled up, and uniformed men piled out.
"Is everyone out?" Someone screamed. No one answered.
"How did they get in the school? Its fireproof on the outside!" Someone else yelled.
"Stop, Kaden!"
She continued to run towards the building. "Is everyone out?"
"I don't know!"
People were desperately coughing and scattering from the burning school. Kaden doubled over in pain, and stood up again.
"What's wrong?" He said, reaching her. He gasped. Her eyes were glowing again. They went to the sky blue again. She started sprinting towards the building.
"Rowan!" She yelled hoarsely. Ashes burned in Everett's eyes, as he flew after her.
"Kaden, stop!"
He tore after her. She ran into the flaming building. The school collapsed on itself.
The next few moments were like a dream. People ran towards it in slow motion. Everett stopped, tears and ashes burning his eyes. He thought about going in there. He had nothing else to live for. He could at least try to save her. The street was blurry.
