Tieyan POV
"Tieyan c'mon!" Sumya shouts at me. "We're gonna be late!"
"Coming!" I yell back. Today we receive our dragons. In our kingdom, when you reach twelve years of age, you are granted a dragon. Sumya and I are fraternal twins, therefore we are receiving our dragons on the same day.
We climb into a carriage, led by magnificent silver pegasi. My father takes the reins, and we fly towards Ivory Square.
"Are you excited?" My mother asks us, smoothing her tattered pink dress and folding her hands across her lap.
"Yes, Mother," I respond.
"Good," Mother smiles. "Today is a very important day."
Sumya dips her head in agreement.
We hear the pegasi hooves start to clop against the solid ground, signaling our arrival.
Sumya POV
We arrive and the Square. I see benches scattered around. The whole village comes to the ceremony. It is a small village, so not many benches were there. We sat at the one closest to the podium.
I hear Father curse under his breath. "We are late," he murmurs.
"It is okay, Father," I whisper. "No one will mind."
He scoffs, but stays silent.
King Nolan walks onto the podium, his long cape trailing on the ground behind him. He begins his long speech of the importance of maturity and owning a dragon, and the privileges.
I kick the dirt under the bench with the heel of my black boot out of impatience. Come on! Get on with it! I think. Finally, he concludes the speech.
"And now," he says, taking a large sheet off of two crates. "Tieyan and Sumya! Come up to the podium, and claim your dragon."
Dragons were sacred in this land, and these two are just perfect. Tieyan obviously thinks the same, hence her expression.
I stand by the black one with purple tipped wings. Tieyan stands by the turquoise one with silver tipped wings. They are smaller than I had expected, only the size of a lion.
"What shall you call them?" Nolan asks.
"Breeze," says Tieyan.
"Star," I say.
Beatriz POV
My stomach growls for the fifth time today. I need to get something to eat. And so does Quail, I think, glancing at my pure white dragon, with piercing blue eyes.
I leave Quail in my makeshift hut in the woods. I make my way to Ivory Square, where I see a dragon ceremony in progress. Good for them. I think.
My eyes skim the shops that line the Square. I see a young girl, about my age, baking a loaf of bread for her latest costumer. I see some meat hanging in the shop window. Perfect.
I pull my hood over my face to hide my identity, and make my way over to it. I pace into the alleyway, and face the back door. I take my hair pin out of my hair, and twist it in the lock. When I hear a click, I turn the knob. Many smells drift in the room. The smell of salted meat, and fresh bread. I take a deep breath, enjoying the smells, then remember why I am here.
I grab three loaves of bread and five pieces of meat. The girl's costumer looks at me, causing the girls to turn from her spot.
"Hey!" She shouts when she spots me. I make a break for it. I turn on my heel, and race out of the room, towards Quail.
Quail lets out a shocked growl when she sees me, but immediately settles down. I hold up the food I stole. "Lunch!" I say brightly. Quail coos.
I throw Quail three pieces of meat and a loaf of bread. I figure that will be enough for her. I find two large rocks and start a fire. When it is ignited, I impale a piece of meat with a stick, and place it over the fire. I sit on a tree stump with a half of a loaf of bread, listening to the crackle of the fire.
Lillia POV
"Just stay in there!" Mother yells. "It's safe!" Mother storms out of the room, locking the door behind her. I sigh, and fall back onto my mattress. It squeaks as I fall. I sit up and look out of my barricaded window.
I see Ivory Square. A dragon ceremony is going on. The only time Mother lets me out of my room is to feed and exercise Sky, my dragon. Mother has been over the top since Father died. She locks me in my room, thinking it is safer for me. Just once, I wish I had a little action in life.
Krystal POV
"You are going to be late for work!" Aunt Marie yells.
"I am going, I am going!" I respond. I mount Opal, my multicolored dragon, and fly to Ivory Square.
It is a slow day. I've only had eleven costumers. While I wait, I watch the dragon ceremony. I smile at the girls getting their dragons. I remember when—; my thoughts are interrupted by a man snapping in my face.
"Ehem," he grunts. "One loaf please miss."
I put a loaf of bread in the oven to warm it, when I notice the man staring at something. I turn around to see a hooded figure, bread and meat in hand.
"Hey!" I yell, but she is already running. "You have to pay for that!" I yell again, swinging open the door. Aunt Marie is going to kill me, I think.
I give the man the bread, and he thanks me. He hands me five gold coins. "Sir," I say as he turns around. "The bread only costs one coin."
"Keep it," he says gruffly. "It's to pay for what that lady stole."
I stare at him, dumbfounded. No one has ever been so kind to me. I nod my thanks, and he leaves.
Grace POV
I hop on Ivy, and we fly to Ivory Square. My father, King Nolan, told me to meet him there. I obey. We arrive, and I walk up to the podium, where my father waits. He gives his tedious speech, and I watch with Mother, or as the kingdom calls her, Queen Leela.
Two girls my age step up to the podium and choose there dragons. I shoot the one closest to me a small, reassuring smile. She returned it. Soon the ceremony is over, and Ivy and I return to the castle.
I rush up the stairs into my room. I am exhausted. I had fencing practice this morning, which always tires me out. I lay down, and drift into a deep slumber.
