I had two options: cower away and hide my tears, or push away my sadness and find my courage and say everything I wanted to say the past months.
So, courage it was.
I crossed my arms over my chest, tilting my head to the side.
"Actually, hang on," I said, raising my hand to stop both Cat and Derek from talking. Cat's face flushed red, probably afraid to have any actual confrontation. I was recovering from a c-section, but I stood, taller and stronger than before. My daughters gave me that courage. "Since we're all here, reuniting, how about we answer a couple of questions, hm? I've been eager to get you two together so you two can clear up all my doubts."
Derek raised an eyebrow, and in his eyes was a hint of pride. It stirred me on.
"Cat, you were around Derek a lot while he relapsed, why the hell not help him? If you care about him so much to show up at my sisters house, which, why the hell would you do that? But if you care so much, why weren't you there helping him to get sober rather than helping him get drunk at bars?"
Oh, if she could have punched me she would have. She would have disappeared me if at all possible.
Derek spoke, trying to ease the tension surrounding us. "Hannah, we should all just-"
"We should all just speak with the truth," I interrupted. "So please, do tell exactly what was happening between both of you because though it doesn't matter anymore, I believe I have the right to know why the hell she thinks she has the right to show up here out of nowhere." My voice didn't hide the fury I felt.
Cat visibly swallowed. "I just wanted to visit a friend, see how he's doing."
I narrowed my eyes. "Or did you want to remind me of your late night adventures with him while he was drunk?"
Caught red-handed, Cat shifted on her feet, face reddened and eyes wide with shock. Derek frowned, absolute disbelief written on his expression.
"What the hell is she talking about?" He directed the question to Cat.
I raised my eyebrow, confirming my suspicions.
"Your friend here made me believe you two were fuck buddies...apparently you never were."
"Is this true?"
His angered gaze burned through Cat, who ashamed, avoided all eye-contact. I felt relieved - he didn't sleep with her. But the months of pain still lingered.
