The air in the office was heavy with regret. Not the type of regret you can easily do away with or convince yourself you've done nothing wrong. It's the type of regret that made me want to slam my head against the wall because of how stupid I'd been. My chest was tight and in my mind, it was the image of that day when we'd accused Hannah that kept replaying. The hurt in her eyes and how shocked she'd been at the accusation.
Lisa talked, explaining what had been happening for the past months but I couldn't hear her. It was pointless to try to defend myself - there was no way I could ever make up for the shit I'd done, for the pain I'd caused Hannah...or my daughters at this point.
How the fuck...Why?
She'd done everything to gain my trust.
I shook my head, running my hands over my face.
"I'm sorry, Derek," Lisa sighed. "I should have...I can't undo the damage and I should have done more research before letting you know what was going on. But things have changed and you need to talk to Hannah. You have two huge reasons to apologize...we can figure this out later."
Hannah didn't want apologies.
Hannah didn't want anything from me.
"Who do you think has done it?"
It was a stupid question, and truly, the answer didn't matter. The money that was stolen didn't matter...but the why did. Hannah made several enemies in the past, she'd hurt people and betrayed more than any of us knew. Perhaps I'd let her down by doubting her; the least I could do was to clear up her name.
It's the least she deserved.
Smiling sadly, Lisa took a seat. She bit the inside of her cheek, her shoulders slightly slouched, unable to hide the concern in her eyes. I'd known her for years, but right now, Lisa seemed like a stranger. She was worn out.
"I'm not sure." The tears in her eyes were evident, and her chin trembled. "I-I don't know what to do, Derek. It's been a lot to handle. I...uh...tried to talk to Blake, see if maybe he knew anything but he won't talk to me and-"
"Stop." I walked over to her while she wiped away her tears, avoiding my gaze at all costs. I knelt in front of her, holding her hand. "Blake is angry, yes, and they have all the right to be after the stunt we pulled. We jumped to conclusions, Lis...but it'll all clear up eventually." She nodded, a small pout on her lips. "I'm back, and I'm going to try to see how we can solve this."
Reaching out, Lisa ruffled my hair with a small laugh. I hated when she did that, but seeing her smile was enough. We'd been each other's family for a long time. Before Hannah returned, before Evie was around, Lisa was my friend and my sister.
