Hannah

They didn't expect me to walk inside the office and close the door behind me. They didn't expect to confront the person they'd been talking about.

I didn't expect to keep it together, yet weirdly enough, I did, even though inside I was crying.

"So please," I said, crossing my arms over my chest, "please do tell me all about how the father of my children plans to take them away from me."

Cat smirked, not a hint of compassion in her expression. I wanted to lunge at her but kept level headed. They would not see me break down. Lisa's expression soon change—from completely surprised to serious. Angry.

"Hannah, you shouldn't be here."

I snorted. "Really? I thought I was welcome here. That's what you said earlier. You welcomed me with open arms."

"You should discuss this with, Derek," Lisa said. "I won't interfere—it's none of my business."

Cat smiled. "Guess now you know where you stand."

Oh, I felt the burn seeping through my veins, destroying everything in its path. I didn't know what was more painful—thinking that Lisa betrayed me again, or that Derek planned on taking away my two reasons for living.

"No, go ahead and tell me," I insisted, my tone cold. "You seem to know all about it anyways."

Lisa rolled her eyes. "Get out, Hannah. Talk about this with Derek."

Nodding, I looked between them, stared at Lisa in an attempt to comprehend how she could do this. I tried to consider whether Derek would do this to me. I didn't want to believe, but what if was trying to get back at me? He knew nothing could break me unless it came to my daughters. The thought of having them taken away from me took my breath away. I wouldn't be able to live through that.

"Is he really doing this?" I asked Lisa, ignoring Cat's glare. "Is he really trying to take them from me? Is it all a lie?"

Her throat moved as she swallowed, the tiniest hint of remorse showing. "Do you really think Derek would forgive you?"

Wounded, I took a step back, avoiding her gaze at all costs so she wouldn't see the tears the formed.

"Well, this sucks," I said humorlessly, wanting to hide away. I wrapped my arms around my body, trying to keep my hands from trembling.
