CHAPTER 20

Clay's pov

I have never been happier in my all my life. Ariel. Mine? Ok, not mine in the physical sense, but at least she knew how I felt about her and I guess she feels the same. And not forgetting... the kiss. The kiss was a trip to heaven and back. Pure bliss. And right now, as she lay by my side, her head resting on my chest, and my arms around her waist as we watched the evening sun set. I felt like I could rule the world. Ariel made me that strong. I knew I wouldn't be to leave without her in my life again.

A blue robin hopped on a low branch and caught our attention with its low pitched chirping. It was a beautiful sight.

"what a lovely bird", Ariel commented.

"it is", I replied as she stretched her hand toward the bird. "but it would never compare to your charm my princess." She just smiled and called out to the bird.

"hello birdie, come here," she coaxed. "I won't hurt you . come over." The bird flew away and out of sight. Ariel seemed sad.

"hey, it's just a bird"

"I know. I just wanted to... it was just so beautiful"

"you can play with the palace doves, let's go. I'll take you there" I said pulling her up.

"it's not a problem Clay, I'm just being silly. Look! We even missed the sunset!" she exclaimed, looking sad again.

"look at me," I said to her, holding her face between my hands. "the only thing worth looking at is your face when it lits up in happiness. And right now," I said pouting, " you are not giving me that." She smiled with some effort for my benefit. What was in a bird anyway to make her so sad?

Suddenly, there was a light flutter above our heads. We looked up to see a blue bird struggling between tree branches. It eventually freed itself and flew straight at Ariel who gladly put her hands forward to receive the blue robin with a wide grin on her face.

"you came back!" she shouted. "Clay, he came back!" she was extremely happy. I couldn't help but smile, her happiness was contagious. It was a bit surprising though. Birds, even robins do not just fly to strangers. A strange thought passed my head, I tried to shake it off, but it wouldn't go away, besides, I thought, Ariel was indeed the Collector...

"Ariel?" I called, my arms now around her shoulder in the previous position.

"yes," she answered, although still engrossed in the tiny blue bird.

"can you tell the bird to fly away?" I asked.

She looked up at me with a frown on her face. "why? Is something wrong? You don't like the bird?" she queried.

"no, it's just... well... I want to know if you can talk to animals." I blurted out.

"everyone can talk to animals" she replied laughing.

"but not everyone can talk to animals and they actually respond." I said to her.

She looked at me with horror and then looked at the bird with newfound interest.

"can you hear me?" she whispered to the robin. The bird flapped its wings. She looked at me and said, "that does not mean anything, you know." But I could see she was just trying to convince herself.

"why not try something else?" I suggested.

"okay birdie, if you can hear me, fly over to that tree behind the yellow rock, round it three times and come back here." She commanded.

The little bird flapped its wings and flew away from Ariel's hands. It reached the right tree and started to fly around it. Ariel's mouth popped open. I wasn't even surprised. I have more of this type of animal control. But could it be? As exactly the third turn, the bird started its journey back.

"get back!" Ariel screamed, "stay away from me!!!" she shouted at the bird.

"Ariel, calm down" I tried to restrain her. She was scared, but so was the bird. It flew back into the bushes as directed while I tried to keep Ariel from losing it. "Look, it is a normal thing around here to see things that may seem abnormal to you. What you just did is a form of animal control. You can tell any type of animal to do whatever you wish it to, as long as it is within its capability"

"but... I don't have that type of gift yet. I touched no one but your Lilian and Sarah." She cried.

"are you sure?"

"yes, I am."

"Lilian has only healing powers and all the servants in the palace are born without gifts. The herb doctor also is devoid of vampire powers. His powers lies in study of plants and related issues. So it can only be one person...'

"who?" she asked me.

I took a deep breath before replying, "Catherine." She looked into my eyes, confusion was written in their depths. It can't be. I have never even met her" she started.

"but she is the only one I know around this parts who can do what you just did"

"there must be some other explanation"

"Ariel, are you sure you haven't met? Maybe you have and just don't know it yet"

"I doubt that." She said looking away from me. I could sense her withdrawal even though neither of us had moved.

"Ariel, what is wrong?" I asked.

She hesitated before answering. "I think I know what happened" there was an emotion on her face I couldn't decipher. "when Catherine gave you blood which made you recover, you must have gotten some of her life source and maybe even her gifts. Then I touched you and must have collected the animal control in the process." She completed.

I just starred at her. Was she serious? There was no way Catherine's life source or gifts would be in and I would be unaware! It made no sense at all. And Ariel better know the same too.

"Ariel," I began to explain. "the way gifts are transferred has..."

I was cut off by a nasty cry from a distance not far away. A growl followed in response to the cry right behind us...

Ariel huddled closer to me. She was cold. "was is that?" she whispered.

The sound of the night...

It could only mean one thing...
