Everleigh looks in the mirror the blue and purple that once was there, now covered by liquid skin. Hidden from the outside world by a mask.

Tears fall down the once happy woman's face. Washing away the wall that stopped people from seeing the real her.

Ever since Everleigh was a little girl she wanted to meet her prince. Someone who would love her unconditionally. Four years ago she thought she had met him. Oh, how wrong she was.

Now married, Everleigh wishes she had noticed the red flags sooner. Jack, her husband, used to be so sweet to her but once they were married he started drinking more often and being more aggressive towards her.

Jack is a very controlling man. He has rules for Everleigh to follow but being the sadistic man he is he leaves them unsaid so she struggles to go without a fresh bruise.

Everleigh rarely purposely breaks his rules, even when she doesn't he finds some reason to take his vexation out on her.

Right now it's 5:55 on a Thursday and Everleigh is rushing to finish setting the table. Jack is home at 6:00 on the dot every weekday and expects dinner to be ready and the table set. She lost track of time cleaning and is cutting it very close to have dinner ready on time.

Everleigh made fettuccine alfredo with a Greek salad on the side. She got a beer from the fridge for Jack as the beginning beverage to his many in the normal nighttime routine.

The clock stops at 6, Jack is walking through the door. It's like clockwork, he leaves at exactly 7:30 and doesn't come home till 6 pm sharp.

Jack enters the dining room wearing his normal work attire, a suit, and tie. The smell of expensive cologne fills the room.

"On time," Jack observes with a nod of approval.

-

"How was work," asks Everleigh

While giving Everleigh a glare Jack takes another sip of his brew.

"Fine."

Everleigh clears her throat softly before speaking again,

"I was thinking of going down and volunteering at the animal shelter in town and wanted to know what you thought." Everleigh could care less what Jack thought but last time she did something without asking him it didn't end well for her. Apparently picking up a package at the post office requires permission.

"Sure you can go," Jack agrees.

That was surprising, Jack never lets her do anything. He is a man of image though. His wife volunteering for orphaned pets is great positive influence for his brand.

-

It is now nine, Everleigh just finished cleaning up Jacks breakfast and is now getting ready to go to the animal shelter. Everleigh loves helping. Before she married Jack she was apart of many volunteer organizations and spent most of her spare time helping as much as she could which was not much.

Putting on her cloak of liquid maquillage. She looks in the mirror hoping to see a hint of the girl she once was. When she is nowhere to be found she pastes on a smile and walks out the door.

Wearing a long sleeve blue cotton shirt with a pair of worn denim jeans with one too many holes is her preferred attire. Sadly casual isn't in her first-rate peers vocabulary. Her shoes were her favorite blue converse that has seen better days but she would not give up for the world.

Realizing she needs a ride, Everleigh calls for a cab.

Jack may have money but that does not mean he spends his money on Everleigh. Honestly, she has never gotten anything more than necessary since they got married. Plus she hates to ask for anything because he always expects something in return.

-

In the cab on her way into town Everleigh can't help but feel alleviated that she is not in that trap that is her home life at least for a little while.

The air in the cab was quiet nothing all that was heard was the breathing of the driver and her.

In between her house and town is usually quiet at this time due to people at work and kids at school. Living on the outskirts of town has its perks. The quiet is always nice, but the lack of ears means her abuse goes unnoticed.

-

Arriving at the animal shelter Everleigh exits the cab after paying the driver. Walking into the shelter she is greeted by the sound of dogs barking and cats meowing. She takes a deep breath and continues on her way to the front desk.

Standing in front of the wooden desk Everleigh rings the little bell sitting on the right of the sign-in sheets.

"Everleigh" she hears someone squeal before she is tackled to the ground. Hissing trying to contain the scream that wants to escape. Her ribs are most likely bruised from her 'lesson' Jack gave her two days ago. Everleigh forces a smile and squeals back.

"Syd."

"Where have you been Girl I have not seen you much since you got married four years ago to that presumptuous ass ken doll" she emphasizes "four years ago".

Sydney has been Everleigh's best friend since she was ten. Sadly Sydney moved away when they were fifteen and she did not see her for a few years. They reconnected again in college when they ran into each other in their chemistry class.

Everleigh is a Registered Nurse but when she got married Jack convinced her quit saying that he makes enough money to take care of them both and her being madly in love with him agreed.

"Nothin' much. What about you girl you look amazing," Everleigh replies, observing her best friend, noting the shorter haircut.

"I've been doing things here an' there nothing much to mention. What are you doing here anyway not that I'm not happy you are."

"Jus' thought I should do something instead of sitting at home."

After hearing this Syd gets a serious look on her face.

"Why did you quit your job again?" she asks.

"You know I wanted to spend more time at home to work on more volunteer stuff." Responds Everleigh in a small voice. She was manipulated into quitting her job by her husband. Sadly being married to someone with connections makes her life worse than it already is and the freedom she thought she would get not working is hindered. She has people watching her everywhere she goes. Little snitches.

Syd grunts making it obvious that she doesn't agree her but chooses not to pry.

"So," Everleigh clears her throat, "You work here now?"

"Yup moved to New York a few months ago, but just got hired as head Veterinarian here a few weeks ago"

"I'm so proud of you!" she squeals at the news an hugs Syd.

"But, Why didn't you call and tell me?" she asks, trying to hide the hurt of her best friend not talking to her about moving across the country.

"It was a spur of the moment kind of thing. I just wanted a change so I went where the wind lead me" replies Syd.

"Oh. Anyway, I'm here to help today what do you need me to do?"
