Ruby lay on the floor of the small compartment. She wasn't moving. Katie, Jay, Damien, Seth, and worst of all, Rose, stared in utter horror at the mess. Ruby's eyes were wide open. Nothing, nothing at all, moved on her body as a sign that she was alive. Her little frame wasn't strong enough against the shock.
Slowly, a single, final tear fell from her eye. It was her last message she gave to her family. It was a message that she was free from this awful place. Jay was frozen. She had done nothing to save her. She had done absolutely nothing. She was practically swallowed in a gaping hole that rose from her heart. "Ruby! Ruby, no! No! No! No! You're not dead! Get up!" Rose was yelling at nothing. "It's your fault!" she whipped around to Dr. Swartz. He didn't even flinch.
"You heartless monster! MY SISTER IS DEAD! DO YOU EVEN REALIZE WHAT THAT'S LIKE?!" Rose was fuming. Suddenly she fell to the floor. "You have no idea," she cried into her paws. Katie stared at the doctor. "Let me go back with Rose to her room," she said. Turning around, he said only two words: "Very well."Three months had passed since Ruby was killed. Rose had become silent, caught up in her own grief. Everyday, she worked so hard, like working would help her forget. Jay had been there next to her everyday, and Rose didn't fight it. Seth stared at that mirror, for so long it almost hurt his eyes.
The mirror on the roof. Seth had a deep fear of low ground. Ever since he first flew, the ground seemed scary. It was like he belonged up high. The mirror had once fallen onto the ground and picking it up made him fear it the most. He couldn't stand it falling again, and if he asked them to tape it they would most likely deny. So to make sure it was taped he had to have it on the roof.
Everybody thought he was crazy. Jay, Tory, even Damien, his own brother! Seth growled and leaped up. "I CAN'T TAKE IT!" he screamed at Damien, "THEY RUINED OUR FAMILY!!! THEY DROVE ME CRAZY!!! I CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE!!!" Damien stared. His fluffed fur slowly relaxed. "Seth. Ruby is fine. Would you rather her be here? Getting shot with arrows? Being pushed to the point of death?" Seth turned and butted his head to the wall. Your right he thought. You are absolutely right. He crumpled to the floor. And there he cried. In the rec room, Rose sat in the corner. Damien and Seth sat together at another end of the room, while Jay, Katie, and Tory had a few moments to catch their breath. Three of them were chosen randomly to go through a maze. They had to try their best to beat their opponents. Katie hated going against her own brother. And Jay, she was like a…mother. She was usually the one taking care of Rose, fretting over, calming her down when she cried. It was very sweet.
Dr. Swartz walked in. "Good evening," he said. Jay glared at him, "What's so good about it?!"
"No need to get touchy."
"Oh, there's a need."
"Tell me."
"Fine! You're a-,"
"Jay!" Tory coughed. Jay looked at him, relaxed and surrendered. Dr. Swartz had a satisfied look in his eyes, then continued, "Well, I have a new member to introduce you to. After we sadly lost Ruby, well we needed to fill the space." A shadow moved behind him, but it didn't look right. The wings were strange. Then it walked through the door. "Everybody, meet GZI-N208."
Behind Dr. Swartz, stood a small pup, obviously newborn, with dark gray fur and green and dark teal markings. He was quite adorable, with his huge mesmerizing yellow eyes. Although, the most interesting thing was his wings. They weren't bird wings. They were bat wings. "We created an all new hybrid. It took a few tries, many failed. But we finally succeeded. Though he's rather small. Call him whatever you want. He starts training tomorrow," said Dr. Swartz, then left.
Katie got up and walked towards the small pup. "Oh look at you! Your adorable! Come over here you guys!" Katie said. Damien, Seth, and everyone else went to get a look at the pup…except Rose. She was staring at the wall, completely oblivious to her surroundings. Sighing, Jay glanced at her, then looked back to the new member.
Seth asked, "So what did the doc say your name was?" The pup cowered a bit, "H-he said my name was G-g Z I…N? 2 oh 8?" Katie giggled, "Your learning to talk! How cute!" She smiled. "What," asked Damien, "will we call him?" They sat there in silence, thinking.
"Call me Gizmo!" the pup finally said. "Gizmo?" they all said at once. "That's great!" said Jay. Gizmo looked relieved. Their lives were definitely going to change a bit.
