An existence such as yours was a lonely one.
The night sky was your comfort, your black, velvet wings blended seamlessly with the backdrop of expansive midnight void. You spent night after night, year after year soaring through the chilled air. Your sleek body sliced through the air like the sharpest of blades.
However exhilarating it was to propel yourself through the expanse of open space, you only seldom could bring yourself to truly enjoy the wind bending around your scales. For you, the gift of flight was nothing more than a tool. An ability given to you by who ever it was that was responsible for both yours and the existence of every other dragon that had ever graced the skies.
Not that you interacted much with other dragons, being a night dwelling dragon came with both advantages and disadvantages. The lack of interactions between yourself and others of your kind was nice, you got time to yourself and had no need to share any of your catch for the day. Though, you couldn't deny that seeing the occasional flock of those tiny little guys bouncing around every so often would be nice. Or even simply sitting in the company of one of the larger, more dangerous and aggressive species of dragon wouldn't be unwelcome.
Being the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself wasn't as much of a dream as one may have guessed initially.
No matter, this sense of solitude is all you've ever known, so you hadn't an issue with spending your time with the company of nobody besides yourself.
Even now, as you lounged within the mouth of a small cavern you'd come to enjoy, the whistling of the wind singing it's beautiful song through the pines of the surrounding trees, you felt contented.
With a belly full of fish, you stretched out upon your scorched spot of soil, the dirt beneath you burned black from your plasma. A convenient method to keep yourself warm in these long, cold months. Though you were within the entrance of the cave, you had a view expanding a hundred feet or so past the trees, where the edge of this land mass was and the great expanse of blue ocean began.
Through your lazed (E/C) gaze, you watched as the daytime sunlight slowly melted away. Leaving the world in the nighttime's cold embrace, the time of the Night Furies.
With a wide yawn, revealing the row of retractable teeth that your jaw encompassed and a prolonged stretch of your limbs, uplifted your smooth body off of the scorched earth. Shaking yourself to rid of the bits of dirt that clung to your shiny scales.
A strong huff of air was forced from your nostrils, a long sigh following as you shook the sleep from your lean body.
As silent as the night itself, you stepped through the trees, careful to avoid bumping into any sticks or bushes with your large wings and long tail.
'Wonder what this night will bring.'
You emerged from the edge of the dense forest and came face to face with the seemingly endless expanse of blue. That very last remnants of the sunset dashing across the surface of the glistening waters, creating a mantra of swirled blues, oranges and yellows.
You silently watched as the rest of the colors melded into the familiar hues of blue and black you felt for welcomed in, and with not so much as a sound, you stretched your wings and took off into the night. Following wherever the winds decided to take you tonight.
Flying among the stars, with only the moon as your company was soothing, your scales chilled by the brilliant ocean winds.
While you may have viewed flight as a tool to aid in your survival, that doesn't mean you didn't enjoy it every now and then.
With each beat of your powerful wings, your camouflaged body soared higher into the nighttime cloud cover. And with a gentle twirl, you emerged from the sheet of misty fog, now all you could see beneath you was an endless plain of fluffy clouds washed out by the moon light filtering through the atmosphere.
