(Edited - 6/5/17)
Things seemed like normal in the Kingdom. Everyone was happy, without any fear of invaders or powerful villians with evil intentions. At least, it seemed that everyone was happy.
A small house with a neat garden stood at one corner of the Kingdom, closer to the border between the Kingdom and the outside world.
Three dogs and a cat were standing over a marked stone with flowers. All of them looked solemn as they silently grieved for their dead owner.
The dog with a black collar spoke up. "Frost died like a true warrior, and we will miss her. She saved our world, and more importantly, she saved us."
All of them nodded. The dog with a light blue collar spoke next. "As Ender said, Frost saved us all. I wouldn't be standing here without her. I wished... that I could have helped her too..." His voice choked with emotion.
The dog named Ender dipped his head. "Thank you, Paddy. Who would like to speak next?"
"I do." It was the cat that spoke up. "Like everyone here, I'm in Frost's debt. I just want to thank her for bringing me out of the darkness of my old life and into a brighter future. I will never forgot what she did for me."
By the time the tuxedo cat finished her speech, she was almost in tears. A dog with a white collar padded up to her and sat next to her.
"Pancer, would you like to say anything?" Ender asked.
Pancer shook her head. "I believe all of you have already said what I wanted to say. Come Stripes, I'll give you some herbs for the pain."
As Stripes followed Pancer to her den, Paddy looked at them worriedly.
"I am worried too," Ender said, as if he could tell what Paddy was thinking.
"I'm glad someone shares my worry," Paddy responded. "Frost's death has been affecting us all."
"Indeed."
Paddy remembered that day when Frost and Hailbert, her friend, left for the City, Frost's birthplace. She left them behind to keep them safe. From what, she didn't say.
Nearly a month later, Rose, the ruler of the Kingdom, recieved a message from Hailbert that Frost perished in battle.
The news struck all of them hard. It was so sudden, and they were desperately hoping for her return.
Stripes seemed to be taking it harder than others. Ender showed little to no emotion, but Paddy could tell that he was distressed - he had known Frost longer than anyone of them.
Pancer was shocked and upset, but focused on helping Stripes to cope with her grief, while Paddy became angry that he was unable to help and protect Frost, even after what she did for him.
"It's been a long day," Ender sighed. "You should get some rest."
Paddy nodded. Perhaps sleep could help to ease the pain in his heart. As he made his way to his den, he stopped as he saw Stripes lying down, and Pancer trying to comfort her.
It roused Paddy to step forward to comfort the cat. "Stripes..." he began awkwardly. "I... want to say that... we are always here for you."
Stripes smiled sadly. "I know," she meowed. "But it hurts... It reminds me of the time I lost my parents..."
"Paddy, could you watch her for a while?" Pancer requested. "I need to gather some herbs for her, to help her sleep better."
"Of course," he said.
When Pancer left Paddy alone with Stripes, the tuxedo cat turned to him. "Paddy... do you remember your parents?"
"No, I don't," Paddy sighed heavily. "I don't remember them, and I have no idea whether they are still alive."
"Maybe it's best that it stays that way," Stripes mewed. "You wouldn't have to feel my pain to lose someone important twice."
"I... did lose someone important to me too." It was hard to say, but Paddy felt the need to bring it up.
"Her name is Flower. She was one of my closest friends when I was still living in the wheat fields. We used to watch the sunset together in the fields. Somehow, the sunset looks better at the wheat fields." It was beginning to trigger unhappy memories, but Paddy continued.
"One day, there was a thunderstorm. The other wolves and I thought it was nothing, but it brought in a wave of armoured zombies. We... fought as hard as we could, but... it was too much. I-I wasn't strong enough to protect her, and I nearly died that day."
Stripes stood up, shocked at Paddy's story. "I... never knew..."
"Frost saved me then. Not only did she save me from the grasp of death, but she also pulled me out of my deepening sorrow. It still hurts, but now, I decided to move on. It's what Frost would want." Paddy gave Stripes a smile. "I'm sure Frost would want you to be happy too."
"You are right," Stripes mewed, standing up. "I'll do my best to move on. Thank you, Paddy, I needed that."
"Just remember that we will always be there for you."
Outside the den, Pancer watched the pair with a smile.
"It's no wonder you are the medic," Ender commented, causing her to jump. "My apologies for scaring you."
"It's fine," Pancer said, calming down. "Thank you for the compliment, but I did not really do anything."
"Your humility is admirable," he said, before walking away.
Pancer turned her attention back to Paddy and Stripes, who were talking to each other comfortably in the den.
Perhaps this is Frost's will for us to forge a deeper connection to each other. It may have started off as a dark cloud, but a silver lining has emerged from it. Thank you, my friend.
