Stripes found an abandoned hut to stay until the rain had eased. Paddy was glaring at Fern, demanding answers, but she looked nonchalant.
Her belly grumbled, and she realised that she did not eat anything since that morning. She glanced outside, where it was still dark and wet.
"Paddy," Stripes meowed. "How did you know that that sword belonged to Frost?"
Paddy frowned, as if he was unsure. "Something told me... I guess."
"Aura."
"What's that?" Stripes was surprised that Fern spoke as she seemed uninterested in their conversation at first.
"Animals have the ability to sense the aura of living or magical things," she said, lazily leaning against the wall. "Paddy simply sensed that the aura that my sword gave off was similar to your owner. Its enchantment is unique, so its aura is different than other enchanted swords. Of course, not forgetting that he has seen it in action before."
"That's interesting-" Stripes began, but Paddy interrupted, looking agitated.
"How did you know my name?" he demanded, on the verge of pouncing onto Fern. "How did you know that I saw Frost using the sword before this?"
"Oh, I know a lot of things," Fern took the chance to mock him. "Like your overwhelming regret that you weren't able to help your owner and you blame yourself for her death. I also know that you have two other friends, a dog named Ender, and the other, called Pancer."
Paddy was about to leap at her, but Stripes stopped him with a pleading look.
"Oh, that's right, aren't you supposed to thank me for saving your lives?" Fern asked, smirking.
"Paddy, she's right," Stripes muttered, hoping to convince the dog to calm down."We could have died if she didn't cut in."
He sighed. "You are right," he admitted reluctantly.
Paddy turned to Fern. "Thank you for saving us."
"Hphm, that's better I suppose," Fern said. "Here's a friendly reminder: I'm not a hero; I'm a villain. If you think you are safe being around me, think again."
She's serious, Stripes realised.
"While it was amusing to see you desperately begging for answers, I'm going to take my leave. Good luck, because you will need it." Fern started to walk away.
After she left, Paddy let out a growl of frustration.
"Are you okay, Paddy?" Stripes asked, concerned.
"I'm fine... just frustrated that I couldn't get some answers," he let out a heavy sigh. "At least the storm is calming down."
The storm had eased to a light drizzle and the sky was clearing, letting light shine on the forest. The sun's position in the sky told Stripes that it was around afternoon. She didn't realise that they were out for so long.
"We are close to our destination," Paddy said after taking a quick glance outside. "But we should get something to eat first."
Stripes nodded. They headed out of the hut and split up to hunt. Even though Stripes did not hunt often, she managed to catch a fish after a few attempts. It could have been worse.
Holding the silvery fish in her jaws, she met up with Paddy near the abandoned hut. He was carrying a small sheep in his jaws.
"They are easier to catch than I thought," Paddy remarked. "At least the chickens and cows would run."
Stripes smiled. "Catching this fish wasn't easy. They keep slipping out of my paws and swimming away. I was lucky to catch this."
He gave her a nod and started eating. They finished their meal swiftly and resumed their journey.

Sergeant didn't like his chances. He had failed to kill the animals that his lord commanded him to.
His soldiers were wounded, barely hanging on the thread of death that could break any moment.
Sergeant couldn't believe it. The attacker was a human with green eyes and wielding the exact same sword that was used to kill his soldiers when they attacked the wolves at the fields.
"It's impossible," he growled to himself. From what his lord told him, when that human died, her sword disappeared. There was no way that the green eyed human could have gotten it.
Sergeant braced himself for the worst as he entered the dark throne room, where the mysterious figure was waiting.
"You returned."
"M-my lord..."
"I watched the fight. You were... quoting your attacker... "utterly defeated". Am I right?"
Sergeant trembled. "Yes."
"I have no time to deal with you now. Some people are poking their nose into this... and I will not stand for it. Gather your zombies. We are going to war."

Things look like they are going downhill... and now the Kingdom is about to face its first war...
How will the Kingdom respond? More importantly, why were Paddy and Stripes sent to go to the fields in the first place, and will it help the Kingdom?
On other note, what do you think of Fern's personality?
