Chapter 44 // Just a Touch of Normalcy

 Annabelle's POV:

Waking up the next morning wasn't as hard as its been over the past few days and that honestly brought me so much relief, that I would leave Carter behind and move on. I threw on some jeans and a white shirt after showering and brushing my teeth and I looked quite presentable today. Throwing on a pair of boots completed the look and I went downstairs to see Danny. "Where's Matt?" I questioned leaving Carter out on purpose. Danny didn't look up from his phone once as he said "Matt's running late today and Carter doesn't want a lift anymore he said". I hadn't asked for Carter's response and was sure it was because Danny wasn't listening properly but I shrugged, what he was doing didn't matter to me anymore.

I got into the car with Danny and started playing my favourite CD and enjoyed being with just Danny for once. I feel like we had been distant lately. "How's Gwen?" I asked wondering how they had been after the hotel mishap. Even though his eyes were trained on the road I watched as a small smile grew on his face as he said snidely, "we're good". I smiled and turned out the window, im glad he was taking her seriously and not playing with girls hearts. Maybe he was changing for the better. "How are you?" I hear Danny asked tentatively and I think about this, how am I? I'm stronger and wiser and I'm healing and realising the truth. "I'm better" I say with a smile as we pull into school.

Today seemed like a better day. Something had changed and maybe it was me; hopefully it was me. I meet Tara in the library like usual and I take a seat. She looks up at me from her book and cereal bar as I tell her, "I need to tell you what was up". She slams the book closed and takes another bite of the coco pop bar as she leans forward in the chair, looks me in the eyes and says hyperbolically "Finally!". I giggle slightly and even before telling Tara I already feel like im going to lose a big weight off of my shoulders. "Carter and I are over" I say feeling a little hitch in my throat as I spoke the words I swore I wouldn't utter. Speaking them into reality brought it to life and made it so real, even though we had been over I guess I hadn't felt it to be so real until this point. Tara's eyes widened at this revelation but she took another munch of her bar none the less. "We'd had an argument in the day about me always staying in my brother's shadow and then I went around his house to tell him that I lo-" I didn't finish. I couldn't finish. I couldn't speak this to life. Into reality. "Well tell him something important", I continued avoiding the L word, "and he just told me we were over. It was short. Blunt. And also one of the most dickhead things he could have done".

Tara let it absorb as she sat back and finished the bar. She scrunched up the wrapper and tossed it into the bin behind us in one as she lets out a deep breath as she breathes one word, "Asshat". I giggle at this word and not out of humour but for the fact that I completely agreed. Confusion plagues her face as she asks me inquisitively, "he looked so smitten with you though?". I scoffed mentally, yeah I thought so too but look what happened. I gave a weak smile and shrugged my shoulders. The bell rang as we stood up and grabbed our bags, Tara hooked her arm around my shoulders as she said quietly into my ear, "just say the word and I'll chop his balls off in 0.2 seconds flat". I laugh at Tara's protective tone as I looked at her and said, "if he had balls he wouldn't have dragged me along like he did". Tara patted me on the back and said, "wiser words were never spoken young one". Damn I loved my best friend. We laughed all the way to first period.

Classes were slow but my mind was focused on them and kept any negative thoughts far away. Lunch was busy and talking with Tara also kept my mind off of everything going on. I had a lot on my mind and I just wanted to ignore it for a day. That's exactly what I did. I pushed it to the back of my mind for now and would deal with it when it resurfaced, which it undoubtedly would.

Double update? Look at me becoming the writer of the century. i'm really working hard on getting this book finished guys as i have a surprise....
