Carter's POV:
I was in the kitchen with an ice pack to my head but all I could think of was Annabelle. Where had she gone? Was she okay? God damn of course she wasn't okay, I had seen the way Matt had thrown her across the drive sending her straight into the gravel. I had seen the red marks on her knees that were undoubtedly covered in scratches. The way she had immediately grasped her elbow suggested that something had happened there to and her lips. Her beautiful, soft, pink lips had been cut by the very ground we had been fighting on. I was so stupid. Why hadn't I told her all this before? I had to watch her heart break all lover again in front of me and that was more painful than I care to admit.
Her father walked into the kitchen with her phone in his hands as he said, "this is why we couldn't reach her". I began to worry more so now, it was getting darker, Annabelle had no phone, who knows what kind of injuries and I wasn't with her. Fuck. Why wasn't I with her? I stood up from the counter as my mother looked in my direction and hastily told me to sit back down. "Mum we need to find Annabelle, she hasn't been here in a while and im sure her memory isn't as good in the dark". My mother nodded tentatively and sat back at the table as her father placed her phone down on the table. "Where could she be?" he wondered out loud as the rest of us thought. I thought harder than anyone. I had known her since I was 7 and knew her better than most people, maybe apart from her brother. However, I know we still shared something. God knows I still loved her.
Where would she take herself around here? What did she know? Where had she been? There was one place. For all we knew she could have run home but I knew she wasn't much of a runner and would've given up too soon to make it. I grabbed my keys from the desktop as I said, "I think I know where she is, I'll be back".
Getting in my car, I fumbled around when putting the keys in the ignition. I was hoping, praying that she was still the Annabelle I knew. The predictable Annabelle. The funny Annabelle. The strong Annabelle. My Annabelle. My foot when down too hard on the gas as I found myself speeding towards her. Hopefully towards her. Getting out of the car I looked at the dark setting before me. She wasn't here. Crap. I had been wrong. Maybe I didn't know her. Maybe I had bitten off more than I could chew. Maybe I - creak. My head rose up to the quiet but definite sounds I had heard. I walked into the park as I saw the small figure of a girl sitting alone on the swings.
My feet were planted on the ground behind her. She was safe. She was here. She was crying. I could hear the faint sniffling coming from that direction as I proceeded to walk towards her. "Hey" I breathed into the cold night air.
