Tyler's pov:

It was a day like any other, for most of the people living in Dema, at least. The temperature was low and the air was damp. It's almost as if it was weighed down by all the the dreams and hope it has absorbed. I remember that autumn day like it was yesterday. It's always autumn in this city. I heard the wind knocking on my window while I lay on my mattress staring at the sealing. Everything felt so grey, dull. I was so sick of it. Yet terrified of anything colorful. I felt a metallic taste in my mouth as I changed my position for the first time in a while. My eyes darted across the wall gazing at nothing in particular. My mind is elsewhere. I heard them calling across the streets. It was time for the daily ceremony. Which was normalcy for everyone. Except, this wasn't a normal day for me. Something was off. Its almost as if someone was talking to me, but I couldnt hear a word. It was almost as if I could feel sunlight, but the sky was almost black.

I stood up from my mattress, my head feeling heavier than usual, and I looked at my reflection on the window. the sleepless nights are really starting to show. My brown hair is a fluffy mess. I jumped back when I saw a vulture land on the window sill. Someday, this creature will be my death eater. It seemed hungry with its red wide eyes. Angry even. It was like a reminder that I was gonna be late to the ceremony.

My hands were in my pockets as I walked across the dirty streets of Dema. They don't care enough to clean it up. Not once did they clean it. Dema isn't my home. My home would be clean. Am I the only one I know that thinks like that? I looked up. Which was quite a peculiar movement here because no one looks up anymore. Why would they? There are no stars. There are no clouds. Clouds are everywhere around us. Stars are a myth. They would just see either the color black or grey. Metal. Darkness. Hopeless.
But today, today the sky was a very weird shade of Cobalt blue. Even the slightest change in this town can give me hope. Its like even the tiniest fly can change the way I think for a little second. But then id go back to not caring, just as I have been taught. Just like them. They don't care. No one ever does.

My feet found their way to the middle circle. Where it all happens. I went down and up a bunch of stair cases looking down at my feet, avoiding eye contact. Like I've been taught. I must do what I've been taught. Or else I would be punished.

It was a large circular room. I sat down hesitantly in one of the seats in the back row. People around me started sitting down. It was completely and utterly quiet. You could hear women's hair swaying as they moved. You could hear people's heart beats. If I weren't used to this, I would be incredibly creeped out. All I could hear was deafening silence throughout the crowd of people. I wanted to scream. The silence was hurting my ears. They felt like they were bleeding. After a little while, The neon lights the seats were facing finally lit up. And the nine hooded figures entered in order as the practiced work was about to commence...
