After enlisting in the navy, Evonitz first ran into trouble with the law in 1987, when he exposed himself to a 15 year-old girl, and was arrested when his ship returned to port. He was sentenced to 3 years probation. On September 8, 1996, Evonitz kidnapped a 16 year-old girl from her front yard, her body was found 5 days later. May 1, 1997, he kidnapped two sisters only 15 and 12, both bodies were also found 5 days later. June 24, 2002, kidnapped another 15 year-old girl and took her to a hotel, where he repeatedly raped her. After he fell asleep the young girl escaped, and Richard Evonitz killed himself when the police arrived.
