Some Years Ago

A young Roman whined as his father beat him at chess, again.

"Calm down, boy," his father chuckled. "You need to think. Use your head. Slow down."

The two reset the pieces on the board. Roman's father gestured for him to go first.

After some minutes, Roman's father leaned back to observe their game.

"What? What is it?" Roman asked his father, looking at all the pieces.

"There," his father pointed at his queen. "You've left it wide open."

"So? As long as I've got my king I'm fine, right?"

His father shook his head. "Have I taught you nothing?"

Roman bit his lip in frustration. He hated disappointing his father.

"The queen is the most powerful piece on the board, son, she can-"

"But I thought the king was?"

"Let me finish," his father said, smiling softly at Roman's eagerness. "She can move in any direction, and go as far as she wants. That's why the queen is the most powerful."

"Even more powerful than the king?"

"Yes, he can only move one square at a time. However, the king is the most important," his father explained.

Roman's brows furrowed in confusion. "Well why is the king more important than the queen if he's not the most powerful?"

"Because once he's been taken, the game is over."
