Chapter 24:

~Echo~

“Then Ernie had the nerve to try and pick a fight with me,” Elissa said while the four of us sat on the large couch in the Common Room.

The three of them had spent the whole afternoon telling me about what happened during the time I was ‘away’ as they called it. I just sat and listened, and was given an endless supply of hot chocolate with marshmallows. Fred and George had told me all about the pranks played and how they would escort Harry around the school yelling “Make way for the Heir of Slytherin.” I told them that I did not find that at all amusing, which they knew I was lying about.

The truth was, I knew who opened the Chamber and who was attacking the muggleborns. I knew it was Ginny, I had known since that night…but I didn’t know if I should say anything. I decided to keep my mouth shut for now and possibly try to talk to Harry about it. As of now though, he had yet to show up. I was just hoped that he would be at Dinner so I could speak to him afterwards.

Elissa went on about her new friend, but I honestly was not listening that much. I was struggling between my racing mind about what could lead Ginny to attack people and whether or not Esca was going to be okay. Also, no matter how hard I tried, I could not manage to quiet the auras of everyone in the room. I could feel everything and I wanted it to stop.

“Echo?” George whispered, making sure Elissa did notice he was interrupting her story.

              I looked up at him.

“Are you okay? You seem distracted.”

Next to him, Fred gave me a worried expression, telling me he had noticed as well.

“I will tell you both later, when we are alone,” I told them.

“What are you three whispering about?” Elissa asked with an amused smile. “Not even a full day yet and you three are already keeping secrets.”

“She was just telling us how boring your story was,” Fred teased.

“I’m sorry,” Elissa said sarcastically. “I didn’t spend my days teasing Harry and pulling pranks on Slytherins.”

“Maybe you should go with them sometime,” I told her. “It is actually a lot more fun than you would think.”

              “I’ll pass.”

I smiled at her. Her sarcasm was so much like Esca’s though more joking and not always so cruel. Was it just a habit of me to surround myself with people like that?

“Come on,” Fred and George said together before they got to their feet. “Let’s go to dinner.”

Dinner was loud. Everyone seemed to be excited that all of the people that were petrified were now awake. Dumbledore even canceled all the finals, which was a relief for me since I had had no time to stuff…or go to class. Hagrid was back and sitting at his spot at the professor’s table. He looked very pleased to be here, and I was pleased to see him back so soon.
