Chapter 7:
~Esca POV~
When Echo disappeared from sight, I panicked a little. I still could not read her aura. Everyone had been so distracted by the fight between the adults that no one was paying attention. I was waiting by myself for George or Fred or Elissa to come back. They all went off in their own directions to look for her, so I stayed here just in case she came back.
The feelings that that horrible man had towards her were so strong with hate that I was even shaken when I felt them. Then I felt Echo’s aura shift. Though I could not read it, and I had never felt it before, I knew it was hers. The shift felt odd, like a warning. Then the feeling was gone. Soon after she was staring off into space.
Next thing I knew I turned around and she was gone.
So now I have been standing here all alone waiting for the last twenty minutes. I scanned the crowd again. No familiar faces. I hoped it would not become a habitat of hers.
“Esca, Esca, Esca, poor alone little Esca.”
The voice sent chills down my spine. I turned and saw their owner.
“What do you want?” I hissed.
“Oh, no hello?” he asked with a smile. “I should not expect much from you. After all you can’t even watch over a little girl.”
“Girl?” I asked. Then it hit me. “Echo! Where is Echo?”
“Oh you mean the girl with the troubled aura; she is coming up the way with that red-head twin. George, right? One with the golden aura.”
“What did you do to her?”
“Oh Esca, you look so scared. Ah, does Esca, have a crush?”
I pulled in the emotional layer of my aura in and expanded the barrier layer. I had trained and trained to be able to completely hide my aura from those who had the power to read the aura of a Reader.
“Someone learned a new trick I see.”
“Shut it, Leon!” I hissed. “Now tell me where Echo is.”
“Her brain is still working thanks to me. After that shock she felt from reading that mans emotions towards her. Poor girl; doesn’t know her true power. Did you see the wand she has? Full of history, it is.”
“Leon, just stay away from her.”
“Why? Has Miss. Maritime given you another one of her silly warning? Stay away from silly little girl, Esca. Well, guess what I know about the world now that I have traveled. And I know that girl Echo, is more important than you know. Do you know the color of her aura?”
I glared at him.
“Ah, so you cannot read it. Nor can I, to be honest. She is too powerful. Better get her under control before she destroys herself and everyone around her. Look there she is, with that boy who will hopelessly fall for her judging by his aura.”
I looked to see George and Echo walking up the ally hand in hand. George’s aura burned the bright gold it did when Echo was near him. I couldn’t help, but notice the shape of his aura changing, almost morphing around her.
“You see it too,” Leon said softly. “She is dangerous. I will have to have a word with Miss. Maritime about this.”
“And why would she listen to you?” I hissed at him.
The tall black haired, blue eyed boy smiled at me. “I may only be a year older than you, and I may be in Slytherin, but that doesn’t mean I am not trustworthy.” He smirked and pushed his hands in his pockets. “Now, I must be going. See you at school, Esca.”
“Stay away from me,” I yelled at his back.
He just waved a hand up in reply without stopping walking.
“Hey, Esca, what are you looking at?”
I turned and smiled at Echo. “Nothing. Just thought I saw something I know, is all. Now, dear Echo, where have you been?”
“I went for a walk,” she lied. “I needed to clear my head.”
I nodded. “Don’t listen to what he said. The Malfoys are stupid to think ill things of you. You are the sweetest person I know.” I kissed her forehead softly. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a flash of angry cross George’s face. His liking for her was adorable.
“Echo!”
Elissa came running towards us. Echo ran off and met her halfway.
“Ever thought about telling her?” I whispered to George.
“What?”
“Oh come off it George, it is obvious you like her.”
George gave me a look of annoyance. “I think you are confusing your own feelings.”
I gave him a soft smile, ignoring his comment. “Just be careful, she is not exactly what you think.”
George narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean? I know her better than you.”
“Maybe, but just heed what I said. Now, I have to go. I will be back. Don’t worry about waiting up on me.”
Before George could answer, I walked off. I had no doubt in my mind that Echo was a Reader now. If Leon could not read her aura, than she must be. The way she was affected by Mr. Malfoy made it even clearer. Only a Reader would be so badly affected by that. To feel another’s emotions towards you was hard, good or bad, and it sometimes put your aura in shock. I had happened to me once before when I read my father’s aura.
The thought sent a shiver through my back. “Four Readers,” I whispered. There were four Readers at Hogwarts. Miss. Maritime, Leon, me, and Echo. We must be some of the only ones in the world. The gift (or curse) was rare. My father did not have it, but I did. That was odd. In the past it ran in families, but now it would randomly pop up. Echo’s family is all muggles. Leon…well all I knew about his family was that they were all in Slytherin.
“Oh well,” I sighed. “Right now I need to focus on reading Echo’s aura.” I had a scary feeling she was something every dangerous. If I could just get a quick feel of her aura I could determine where or not something needed to be done. Until then I would hope for the best, and try to find an answer.
