Chapter 18:
~Esca~
"How could you do this? How could you let this happen to me? It is all your fault. If she understood who she was this would not have happened to her!"
"Esca, you don't know that," Miss. Maritime said, staying completely still and calm in her chair. "Echo being petrified has nothing to do with her being a Reader."
"How do you know?" I hissed.
"Because what would you change about it? Echo somehow knows that you are a Reader as well so she does not go walking that night? No, her knowing would not change the fact she is a muggle born."
I hit the wall. "It doesn't matter. You don't have to lie to your best friend every day and pretend that you do not know the pain in the back of her eyes. It is torture to do. I should have ignored what you told me to do and just tell her."
"She cannot know," Miss. Maritime said. "You know that."
"Whatever," I yelled. "I am going to tell her the moment she wakes up. She needs to know. I need her to know."
"Because you love her," Leon said stepping forward.
"No because she is my friend," I shouted at him. "She's not your friend, yet you told him about yourself."
"Because I can help her," he said. "Unlike you."
"I can help her, more than you. What are you going to do? Make her torment a poor muggle? How is that right? I can show her how to do things that you still cannot do."
"Esca, dear, you are very powerful," Miss. Maritime said, "I know this, you know this, but you are not quite what she needs. The guider of the Reader must be someone strong. I cannot, but Leon. He can."
"No! It cannot be someone as evil as him. I refuse to let you be the one that teaches her. It cannot be him. If You-Know-Who returns he will first in line to join him. Just look at his aura. It reeks of betrayal."
Leon rolled his eyes. "As if. Someone like you could never read my aura. You cannot even compare to me."
I let my aura flare around me, allowing the other two see the outter layer. The part of my aura that they could not touch because I was a Reader. I took my wand out of my pocket and pointed it at Leon.
"Oh, the boy wants to fight," Leon said to me, laughing. "Okay, let's bring it on." His aura flared and I saw the grey outline form around him. I knew his aura was stronger than mine. I knew he could overpower me, but at this point I honestly didn't care. I wanted to fight him and I wanted to see pain in his eyes at least once before I was beaten.
"Afflatus!" I shouted.
Leon was surprised by the spell, that I was sure he did not know the counter curse to. He flew back and hit the wall. I took the chance to let my aura expand more and send a flare out his way. It hit him and I watched his aura falter for a second before he was on his feet again.
The aura around me strengthened my body, like a sheet of armor. It was strong and powerful. The magic within it could also be used to attack an aura, hurt it, harm it, weaken it. It was easy to do to a non-Reader, but on a Reader, it could be difficult.
"Wow, little Esca has learned how to fight," he said brushing his clothes off. "Let's see if you can compare to a true Reader though."
His hands went up. I was only about to brace myself as my aura was hit by the full force of his. My back slammed against the wall as I tried to push against his full force of him. I watched Leon as he did not struggle at all, but just stood there, watching as I was withering under his power.
