With a hand on my shoulder, Alex leads me to the vet's room.
I push the door open before he can. I'm not some submissive pet who's too scared to open doors.
The room looks like a normal doctor's office. It even has that distinct doctor's-office smell.
"Hello. I'm Dr Foster. You must be Mr Dunn." A tall parbeing woman holds out her hand.
"I am." Alex completes the handshake.
"So, I believe you're here..." she begins talking to him without even greeting me, as if I'm some inanimate object that can't understand them. I won't let her get away with that.
"I'm Nina!" I interject, cutting her off midsentence. "It's nice to meet you," I hold out my hand for my own handshake.
She stares at me with a mixture of shock and disdain.
"Yes, hello," she answers before continuing her conversation with Alex, leaving my hand hanging.
Her long black hair is silky smooth. She has a narrow hourglass figure and is almost as tall as Alex. She's perfect.
I observe them as they interact. He has a strong build with short dark hair and a sharp jawline. They're both perfect.
I can't help but look down at my body. I'm a head shorter than both of them. My hair is jagged with different lengths all over. I'm small, thin, and even bony in some places.
"Just here for a check-up and to have her chipped," Alex's voice pulls me out of my thoughts. Chipped?
"Alright, we'll start with the check-up. Chipping usually makes them irritable."
A shiver crawls down my spine. "Alex, what do you mean 'have me chipped'? What's a chip? You told me this was just a check-up."
The vet looks surprised that I would dare speak.
He puts his hand on my shoulder. "We're just going to inject you with a GPS tracking chip. It's no big deal. It's the size of a grain of rice. In a few minutes, you'll forget it's even there."
Shit. This is going to make escaping much harder. This was the real reason for coming. This was his plan from the beginning.
"You're a liar," I growl.
"I've not lied, Nina." He's irritated.
"You said this was just a check-up. You lied to me."
"It's a normal part of human check-ups."
"But you knew that I didn't know that."
"Is the chip a problem? Were you planning to escape the moment I took my eyes off you?" Dammit. He was expecting me to try something.
He's right. I have no leg to stand on unless I admit that I was planning to escape.
"Let's just get it over with," I grumble, trying to change the topic.
He gestures to the examination table.
I hop on it and avoid looking at him. I'm still bitter.
The leather straps on the table do nothing to calm my nerves. If they try strapping me down, I'll lose it.
"Take off the jacket," the vet instructs.
I do as she says. Alex takes the jacket from my hands.
"We're starting with blood tests. If you hold still, you won't even feel it." The vet puts on a pair of disposable gloves and picks up a hypodermic needle.
