Everyone is standing around chatting. I'm disappointed to see I'm the only human. It's not like I wanted to meet others. I was just hoping I'd stick out less.

We head to the fire to drop off our meat. My face lights up when I see Charley, but my smile quickly fades as I spot Abel next to him.

"Remember," I whisper to Alex, "They're not at work. Don't give them orders."

Alex, Abel and Charley all greet each other. I don't want to talk to Abel, so I just let them ignore me.

"Nina, how have you been?" Charley's voice brings my attention back to the conversation.

"Oh... uh..." I wasn't expecting that. "I-I'm good... Thank you Charley." I have a small smile at the end.

"That's good to hear."

Alex leads me back inside the house. It was nice of Charley to greet me.

"Okay, Miss Social Bug, now what?" he says in a hushed voice.

I scan the room. There's a whole bunch of people playing pool. "Go ask them if you can join."

"No. I've barely played pool. I'll get trounced."

"It's not about winning. It's about meeting new people. Give it a shot."

He plays round after round. It turns out that he's pretty good at pool. I sit at the side, watching him. I'm glad he's having a good time, but I'm kind of bored sitting here by myself.

I guess I could go talk to Charley again. "I'm going to check on the meat," I call to Alex.

He nods, giving me the go-ahead.

I head back to the fire and tuck my chain between my hoodie and shirt so it's less noticeable.

"Kitten?" Abel questions as I arrive. I'm disappointed to see Charley isn't here. It's just Abel with two other men.

"Um... I just came to check on the meat." I'd rather not be here. "It doesn't look ready, so I'll be on my way." I turn around to leave, but a huge man blocks my path.

"Don't go. You don't even have a drink," he says with his deep voice. They surround me. I don't want to make a scene. I take slow breaths, trying to remain calm.

"I'm good, thank you."

He looks surprised that I declined his offer. He probably thinks humans aren't allowed to say no. If I tell him it was a parbeing's decision, then maybe he'll leave me alone. "I'm not allowed to-to have alcohol."

"Who says?" He seems almost offended.

"Alex."

He gives me a blank look.

"Captain Alex Dunn," I clarify.

"Who cares about Captain Alex Dunn," he says in a high voice, mocking me.

"Kitten." I quickly turn to face Abel, who is way too close for comfort. "You look much better now that you've been washed. I almost regret giving you to Alex. You'd fit in rather well with my... collection."

I glare at him. You didn't 'give' me to anyone, you fucking creep. I'd say that out loud, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intimidated.

I yelp as a hand on my shoulder yanks me around.

"I'm a Major. I outrank Captain Alex Dunn. Now drink." The huge man pushes his beer bottle into my hands.

"I... I can't."

"She can have mine," I hear Abel's voice. Before I can turn back to face him, he pours his beer over my head. The cold liquid runs through my hair, over my face and down the back of my neck.
