After about a hour, they stopped for gas. Chayton pulled up to the gas station and put the van into park. He looked over at Landon to see that he'd taken off his shirt because of how hot it was. But he, after a second, found himself staring like an idiot in Landon's general direction.
"What?!" he asked in a sour tone. Chayton had been caught. "D-do you want something out of here o-or not?!"
"Uh yeah, sure and i'll pump the gas if you pay," Chayton mumbled back. He watched as Landon threw his shirt to the back of the van and slipped out of the car.
Chayton watches as Landon walks into the store. How could someone be so secretive about themselves? They were lifelong friends and he was just now figuring out about his scars. He gets out the car and looks back into the store where Landon was handing the clerk bills.
Chayton grabs the gas handle, opens the side of the car, and puts it in the minute it starts pumping gas. Landon caught his eye as he walked back out of the store, before looking both ways to be sure that he doesn't get hit by a car. His hair was windswept and laid flat against his forehead from the result of having no product in it and his strong stomach muscles were very hard to look away from. He looked almost angelic.
"Done staring?" Landon smirks. Chayton's eyes widens as his face heated up.
"I-I wasn't staring at you, you loser," Chayton said, stuttering quickly.
"Then what were you staring at?" Landon asked, leaning against the side of the van to get a better look at Chayton's face.
"I was just looking into the store," He growled, snatching his sprite from Landon's hand. He closed and tightened the gas gauge and got into the driver's seat. "Get in or i'll leave you."
When they arrived in Mississippi, Landon drove them to a nearby Waffle Home just so Chayton could get some sleep. Landon parked and turned to wake him up, but instead ended up staring. Wow, he thought. He didn't look real. His face was illuminated by the bright restaurant sign and his pink, full lips were slightly parted as he breathed softly. Without noticing Landon had leaned close to his face.
"Wake up, you butt," he whispered, backing away from Chayton. He watched as he didn't move. Landon glared and punched Chayton in his ribs. "I said wake up!" And magically with a groan, he was awake.
"We're here?" he asked, in a raspy voice that caught Landon off guard.
"Well duh," Landon muttered, "come on." They walked side by side into the entrance, immediately being welcome by the warm, comfy atmosphere. Chayton visibly relaxed and let a sigh be drawn from his lips. Landon saw the exhaustion in Chayton's eyes and grabbed his hand to guide him towards a booth in the corner. Only moments later did they get approached by a waitress.
"What can I get you boys?" she asked, in quiet tone seeing Chayton resting his head on the wall.
"Could I have the grits with a biscuit and bacon, please?" Landon asked politely.
"And anything for him?" she asked, glancing towards Chayton, whose head was nodding. Landon just shook his head. "What would you like to drink?"
"Some hot coco please," he smiled, and she responded with a nod before leaving them alone. He just sat staring. At him. With nothing particular on his mind. But he was admiring the small features that barely were noticeable on the other boy's face. Like the mole under his right eye. Or the beauty mark on his top lip. He liked appreciating the little things in life. And maybe he was overreacting but whenever he looked at him he'd go into some kind of trance. And to say that he looked peaceful during slumber would be an understatement.
"Here you are," a voice said, suddenly snapping him out of his thoughts. He looked up at the steaming mug in front of his face before he grabbed it from the woman.
"Thank you," he mumbled, not taking his eyes off Chayton. Landon got that Chayton drove most of the way and yet he couldn't figure out why Chayton was so tired. But instead of trying to think to hard about it he just smiled at the relaxed face of his friend.
Soon Landon got his food to go, packed Chayton and his food into the van. Chayton must've been half delirious because the raven haired boy kept muttering nonsense as Landon had to buckle his sleepy ass in the seat himself because safety first. It was only when he had gotten to his side of the car and started it when he noticed the small, quiet mutterings coming from his friend's pink lips.
"You said something?" He says as he begins driving. When he didn't get a reply, he cautiously takes his eyes of the road and let them slip over to Chayton who was curled up in a ball with a small smile playing on his lips as he mutters some more.
Being genuinely curious now, Landon turns down the radio that was blasting music and cues into his voice.
"I love you," he mutters with the cute, sleepy voice. Landon blinks furiously there was no way Chayton was talking about him and yet Landon still gulped nervously. It has to be Jayda, Landon thought. Is what his mind came up with, but he still doubted himself. Just a little. When Landon finally got tired enough he pulled the car to the side of the road and put it in park.
"Chayton," he whispered, shaking him awake. Chayton rubbed his eyes and yawned. "I stopped for the night, so we're just gonna sleep in here." Chayton stared at Landon truly confused before his words sunk through his thick skull. Landon had already climbed to the back, opened the back doors, and had climbed on top of the van. Chayton joined him on the roof and stared at the rather than talk to him. Until he remembered something.
"Why won't you tell me what happened to your back?" he asked, barely above a whisper. He didn't know why he was scared to ask him. Maybe it was because he was scared that Landon was going to try to change the subject. Or maybe it was because he was afraid that Landon would answer the question truthfully. He finally got the courage to look at Landon, but he felt a lump get caught in his throat when he saw that Landon was staring him in his eyes.
"Because I don't want to get close to you."
