A few days passed, but Safi didn't hear back from Eman after that weird day. "Maybe he got caught up in his workload because of that one patient" , Safi thinks trying to convince herself he wasn't ghosting her.
She walks into the hospital for another day of clinicals and sees the lobby is in complete disarray. Safi speeds up from a walk to a slight jog as she sees she's got a full day ahead of her. She heads up to her department to find Dr. Motts out of breath at the nurse's station.
"Oh Safi, great! You're here! We've got a flu and strep throat outbreak. I need you doing swabs to test patients in exam room 3, 4 and 7 for strep and then assist me with differentiating which patients have the flu and convincing parents their kid just has a cold." commands Dr. Motts tossing a few patient files into Safi's arms.
"On it!" Safi exclaims with a big smile. She rushes to the supply room to grab a few strep tests and then heads into exam room 3.
She knocks on the door before entering to see a 5 year old boy with his mom and baby brother.
"Hello there! My name is Safi, I'm a medical student here at the hospital. I'm here to swab your child's throat to check for strep." Safi says softly with a smile. She washes her hands and puts on her gloves before opening the swab wrapper. Safi sits on the rolling seat and rolls over to the little boy.
"Do you mind opening your mouth as big as you can for me? I'm going to see if I can help make your throat feel better." Safi asks gently. The little boy nods and opens his mouth.
"I'm sorry, he doesn't speak much anymore. Not since a few months ago. That's why I thought something must be wrong with his throat." the mother informs Safi. Safi swabs his throat real quick when she notices a bruise peeking out from the boy's shirt and another on his left arm underneath his short sleeve. She puts the swab in the seal bag and stands up.
"Alright, you're all done! Your doctor will be back with the results shortly. I hope you feel better soon." Safi smiles and collects her stuff and steps out of the room.
She rushes over to the nurse's station to drop off the strep test.
"Do you know where I can find Dr. Motts?" she asks hurriedly.
"Exam room 2 with a possible flu patient." the attending nurse responds. Safi nods and rushes over to the exam room. She hopes she didn't just witness what she thinks she did.
Author's note:
Sorry for the shorter chapters! I've been swamped with activities this past week but I wanted to get something to get the story going again. I hope I didn't shock you all too much with the twin brother! I didn't want Safi and Eman's love story to be picture perfect. There'll be more unexpected twists and turns as the story progress. I will say don't expect them to just end up together though.
