What happened and whose ass do I have to kick?

Kami

I looked up when a pile of books came toppling down in front of me. I helped the small girl who had dropped them pick them back up again.

"Thank you so much, I'm so sorry," she said, sending me a shy smile.

I grinned back at her.

"It's no problem. I'm naturally klutzy, so I feel your pain," I said, shrugging.

She laughed and adjusted the books to stick out a hand.

"You can call me Kay," she announced.

I shook her hand and offered her a smile.

"Nice to meet you, Kay, I'm Kami."

Her eyes lit up with interest.

"Not Kami Jenkins, are you?"

I inwardly groaned.

"The one and only," I said with a small smile.

She shook her head in apology.

"I'm so sorry, that must have sounded horrible. I just...I've heard of you."

I shrugged.

"Don't sweat it. It's hard to walk around campus nowadays without hearing about me, huh. I'm sick of hearing about myself, so I can't imagine how other people must feel."

She chuckled and nodded.

"My roommate and I saw you and your boyfriend walking to class this morning and, I shit you not, she tried to burn you with her eyes."

I tilted my head back and laughed.

"Yeah, yeah, girls can get a little...crazy when it comes to Jett," I said, thinking about Melissa, "I think it's the eyes. But, it could also be the tattoos. Or maybe the body..."

I trailed off, biting my lip thinking about that body. When I came back to earth, I saw Kay with a rather uncomfortable expression on her face.

"Oh, my God, I'm totally undressing my boyfriend in my mind right in front of you, I'm so sorry," I said with a small self-deprecating chuckle.

She waved my apology off and smiled.

"Nah, you're fine. What's his name again? Jett..."

"Skinner," I answered.

She nodded slowly, like I had just confirmed something for her.

"Can you keep a secret, Kami?" she asked.

I hesitated.

"Depends on whom I'm keeping the secret from," I answered honestly.

She nodded.

"That's fair. I'm actually going to need you to keep it from Jett. But only for a little bit. I need...time."

I narrowed my eyes.

"I can't make any promises, Kay. There's a definite chance that, once you tell me, I'll tell Jett. I don't want to keep any secrets from him and we both have this thing about lying."

She hesitated before speaking again.

"How about I tell you, then you decide."

I raised an eyebrow.

"It's up to you, I guess. Like I said, I'm not making any promises."

She nodded and sat down next to me.

"My name isn't Kay. It's Kelly."

I froze and looked at her like a whole new person.

I noticed little things I hadn't before.
