Six Months Earlier
Kami
I watched as my roommate, Rebecca, tried to sneak in quietly. I said nothing only because she was trying for once, and I wasn't one to shit on progress.
She stopped suddenly and shrugged, having confirmed to herself that I was asleep, and gave up any ideas about being quiet. She started singing to herself very loudly and off-key. I groaned and rolled over, pulling my pillow over my head.
"Oh," she said, sounding surprised, "you're awake."
"Yup," I confirmed, my voice husky with sleep.
"Sorry," she said, not sounding sorry at all.
"It shows," I grumbled. I could practically hear her shrugging my words off as she got ready for bed.
My phone rang and I cursed. Apparently, no one wants me to sleep tonight.
I answered with a groggy 'Hello?' and was greeted with an excited squeal.
"Jesus, Mel, I guess everything went well with the new guy," I chuckled, pulling myself up into a sitting position. My roommate, now ready and in bed, glared at me for the disturbance. I wrinkled my nose at her and she rolled her eyes and turned her head into her pillow.
"Oh my God, Kami, it was amazing. He was amazing. I just...ugh. I want two of him so I can have one when he's not there to just look at him."
I rolled my eyes to the ceiling in frustration, though she couldn't see me.
"Kami, I think he's the one," she whispered. I barely held myself back from pointing out that she has a new 'one' every month.
Oh, hell with it. It was three in the morning and I was freaking tired. Sue me.
"Melissa, you think every new guy you meet is 'the one.'"
I could practically see her chin tipping up in rebellion and her mouth pinching with irritation.
"Well, what if this one really is," she defended. I sighed, there was no point.
"Then I'm very happy for you, Mel," I said with as much sincerity as I could muster. Which wasn't a ton, because I wasn't, you know, sincere.
"Just because you don't believe in love doesn't mean it doesn't exist," she continued.
"It's not that I don't believe in love," I corrected in a defensive tone, "I just don't believe in love at first sight, or 'the one,' or unconditional love."
"Well, I do. And I found it in Jet-James."
"You all right Mel?" I chuckled at her stuttering.
"Me? Yeah, I'm fine. Hey, I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"
I didn't have a chance to answer before there was a click, signaling the end of the call. I counted to three to soothe some of my irritated feelings and went back to bed.
The next day, we were walking across campus and we saw her 'one' on the way to class. She grabbed my arm and pulled me over to where he was walking with another guy. My steps faltered a little when I caught sight of his friend. I recognized him, but I had only ever seen his gorgeousness from afar. I never thought...well, more like I never would have believed that such sexiness existed in nature.
Especially his eyes. They were a bright blue-green color that seemed to look right through you. When he looked at me, his mouth tilted up at the corners and he gave me a slight head nod of acknowledgement. I just gave him a small, awkward, tight-lipped smile in response and quickly glanced away. I briefly saw him frown in my peripheral.
