This was typical. A new year, a new home, a new beginning; I got out of the car and walked to front door with some lady i just met five minutes ago. She knocked on the door as we stood, silently on the porch.
A middle-aged woman opened the door with a smile plastered on her face. "Please, come in," she looked me up and down, suddenly catching herself staring at me, stopped her gaze and quickly opened the door wider.
"What's your name?" she asked me politely.
"Samantha" i said looking her straight in the eyes. The thing about foster homes is that you didn't use your last name unless someone asked you, but it wasn't often that someone would.
"Well, Samantha we should get to know each other. Let's go in the kitchen and chat." she said leading me into the kitchen.
It wasn't a small house but i wouldn't call it big. It was just a regular well-kept house. It topped most of the houses I've lived in before.
"Samantha, my name is Tina. You can call me what you would like but to my face I'm Tina or Miss Tina." We were now at the table and my supervisor had left. Tina spoke with a smile on her face but her words were strong. You could tell she was very independent.
"We have a few rules so if you could please listen, we eat dinner at six o'clock every night and there is a chore chart right on that wall and your name will soon be added. Curfew on school nights is eight o'clock and on the weekends it is extended until ten. You will notify me whenever you are going somewhere or if you will be late."
I nod my head as she continues with her endless list of rules, when she finishes she asks, "Do you have any questions?"
I answer with a silent no and she introduces me to the other children.
"This is Kyle, he just turned 15 last month" she introduces me to a tall brown haired boy who looks like an athlete. He nods his head at me and i smile back.
Next is a girl with light blonde hair and captivating blue eyes. She states her name before Tina gets the chance "Hi I'm Hanna, I'm ten." I say hi back to her just not as cheerily.
A boy about five years old is next, "This is John, he's a little shy around new people." The brown eyed boy stares at the ground, hiding his face from me.
Tina turns to me, I guess she expects me to introduce myself, "I'm Samantha," I say quietly, "I'm sixteen." Everyone stares at me for a while but Tina starts the conversation again.
"Hanna, why don't you give Samantha a tour of the house before we eat dinner" and as she says that Hanna grabs my hand and shows me around. We end the tour in her bedroom.
"We're going to be roomates" she says with a bright smile.
"Sounds fun" I say so I don't disappoint her very excited expression.
The happy little girl's smile turns into a frown, "Do you like me?" she asks. I'm caught off guard by this question but I answer quickly.
"Of course I like you" Hanna regains her happy energy as soon as I speak.
"The boys say they don't like me." As I'm about to answer Tina calls us down for dinner,
"Let's go eat dinner" I say changing the subject. She takes my hand once again leading me down to the kitchen
