Thor's mind was a mess.
It had been a really long week. His father comes out of exile and reveals that he has a sister, a sister who is so power-hungry that he had to imprison her in Hel with all of his powers. Immediately after this, his father dies, leaving him and Loki in charge. Hela comes up and claims Asgard as her own. Thor gets stranded on Sakaar, where he's forced to fight Banner. They team up to fight against Hela only for Surtur to rise up in his full might and obliterate Asgard. Not even a shard left.
That isn't it. When all seems well, Thanos ambushes their ship, just because Loki had the daring and the stupidity to carry the Tesseract with them instead of just leaving it on Asgard, where it would have hopefully been destroyed. Thanos kills Heimdall, and Thor loses his best friend in the entirety of the nine realms. In his dying moments, Heimdall sends Banner to Midgard. Thanos obtains the Tesseract, and through it, the second of the infinity stones. Loki, in a last-minute act of valiancy, attacks Thanos with a dagger, but Thor watches as the life is choked out of him. "No resurrections this time..." and Thor feels his heart shatter for probably the third time that day, this time even more than before. Thanos wrecks their ship using the power stone, and Thor is forced to watch half of his people die right in front of his eyes. Yet, he still doesn't die.
He is picked up by the "morons", and he later heads out with the tree and the rabbit for Nidavellir. He picks up an eye on the way from the rabbit, and they have a chat about everything they could lose in the war. Thor personally believes that he could lose nothing, while the rabbit has different thoughts. Tree is busy playing on his contraption. They meet Eitri, and Thor once again almost dies in the forging of Stormbreaker. The weapon touches his hand, he's rejuvenated and good to go.
He reaches Midgard. He takes out a bunch of alien creatures. He takes down their ships.
"New haircut?"
"Notice you've copied my beard. By the way, this is a friend of mine, Tree."
"I am Groot!"
"I am Steve Rogers."
He has a hearty laugh, a sound which is seldom heard in the midst of a raging battle. He takes out more aliens. He sees an explosion in the midst of the forest and goes with Rabbit to find out all about it, seeing that none of his other friends are to be seen. He sees the Vision lying on the ground, a gaping hole in his forehead, just about where the mind stone used to be. He sees the mind stone on Thanos' gauntlet, and he hurls mighty Stormbreaker with all his might. Thanos' return blast is not strong enough and it embeds itself into his chest.
"I told you, you'd die for that", remembering his promise to Heimdall.
"You should've gone for the head"
SNAP!
"What did you do?! What'd you do???!!!!!!"
Thanos snaps himself away, leaving his ax on the ground. Confused, he looks around. He sees the Captain's friend fading away onto dust, and he suddenly realizes what has happened. His fury rises, and he yells out.
"THANOS!!!!"
There's no effect. He sees Cat-man fading away, he sees Wanda fading away, he sees Sam fading away, he sees Tree fading away.
It's all on him. All of it is his fault. He aimed for the chest. He didn't go for the head. If he had aimed for the head, all of this would never have happened. No dusting away, no despair, no desperation, no disappointment, no death. It's all on him.
Rabbit comes up to him.
"I know what you're gonna say, Thor. This is NOT your fault, you get it? You tried your best. It's not on you!"
"JUST SHUT UP, RABBIT! DON'T YOU GET IT? IT'S ALL MY FAULT! I CHOSE TO GO FOR THE CHEST! I WANTED TO GIVE HIM A TASTE OF HIS OWN MEDICINE! HALF THE UNIVERSE IS DEAD BECAUSE OF ME!!!"
"Thor, listen to me. It's alright. Calm down. Just calm down. We know how hard you have tried. Hell, all of us failed. It's not on you, it's on all of us. But we have to move past that, okay? We can't continue moping about our defeat. You want to defeat Thanos, right?"
"IS THAT EVEN A QUESTION, RABBIT??!!!! OF COURSE, I WANNA KILL HIM! I WILL NOT STOP OR REST UNTIL THAT VILE TITAN IS DEAD! HEAR ME, RABBIT! I, THOR ODINSON, VOW TO KILL THANOS, OR DIE TRYING!! AND IF ANY OF YOU COME IN MY WAY, I WILL GLADLY KILL YOU AS WELL! HEAR ME!!!!"
