As we slipped into my mom's car, Kateri and I in the back and Katy in the shotgun. My mom looked in the rearview mirror, and, seeing that we were buckled, started to drive us home.
The first stop was Katy's house. She unbuckled, got out and said she would text us as soon as she could. We nodded, a ghost of a wave from me in the process.
Kateri was next. She got dropped off, gave me a silly face and called out our usually goodbye. She said she'd text as soon as she could as well. I nodded, not really paying attention.
When we got home, I checked my phone to see that I had two texts from a group chat named Detectives. I opened it, smiling to myself when I saw that Kateri had sent a text of a magnifying glass. Katy did the extreme eyeroll emoji. I replied quickly, striping out of my coat, hat and sneakers.

I chuckled to myself, turning off my phone and stuffing it in my back pocket as I slipped on my hoodie.
"Mom, I'm heading out!" I called, slipping my sneakers back on, my hat going over my braids.
"Where?" She asked in response. My mom doesn't like it when I go someplace without her knowing, mainly because I get into trouble easily.
"Library!"
"Be home by 7!" I nodded, opening the door and heading out side.
The wind hit me first, then the chill of it.
I pulled my hat down over my braids some more, trying to keep it from being blown away. The walk to the library was windy and boring. I stood outside and waited for Kateri and Katy to join me.
Kateri showed up first, her hoodie pulled up over her blonde hair. I grinned and tugged it lightly. She pretended to hiss at me, and took my hat as revenge.
We chased each other until Katy showed up, her coat making our hoodies look like summer jackets.
"Geez, Katykat, trying to become the new Frosty?" I teased, earning a punch on the arm. I rubbed it, muttering that she really needed to stop hitting the same spot.
We walked inside, the warmth greeting us wonderfully.
"Come on, maybe they released a newspaper about it." Katy suggested. We did, seeing that there was nothing new on the cases. I groaned, becoming more and more annoyed with police.
We sat at an empty table, scrolling through news apps and flipping papers of newspapers. Then the headline on one of my news apps catches my eyes.
"Guys," I breathed, reading and rereading the headline to make sure I'm reading it right. "I think we might have just found out who our victims are."
Katy and Kateri exchanged glances. Then they nodded and slid over to where I sat, reading the headline too.
There, in big, bolded letters, gave the names of our victims.
Ali and James Harp found as corpses.
