Chapter 2
The following morning Raven and Corvin sat silently on the couch, each nursing a mug of very strong coffee. After their eventful evening they had taken the most effective course of action:
The cousins had decided to act like nothing out of the ordinary had occurred at a quarter to midnight. So far, they had successfully avoided the elephant, or rather, the raven, in the room.
"Is your coffee strong enough Corvin?" Raven asked quietly, her knee bouncing anxiously.
He hummed a response as he tapped his fingers against the rim of his cup in nervousness. "Did I put enough milk on your cereal?" He questioned.
She nodded absently, hating the way they were both actively avoiding the subject, but not quite having the courage to bring it up herself. So the next few minutes passed in an increasingly painful silence until both parties huffed in frustration.
"Why are we-!"
"I think yo-!"
They both began at the same time. Corvin sighed.
"I think you're some sort of shapeshifter." He said in a voice of forced calm while his cousin dropped her thankfully empty mug on the floor.
"You think I'm a-a-"
"A shapeshifter." Corvin finished for her. "Yeah, I do. It's the only explanation."
"No, no, no. I'm sure there's another perfectly reasonably explanation for-for what...happened las-" Raven paused, accepting the fact that she had no other suggestions. "What exactly do you mean by shapeshifter?"
Corvin cracked an amused smile despite the absurdity of the whole situation as he opened up google on his phone to aid his explanation. "They're derived from Greek mythology originally. The Greeks called them Proteans meaning changeable in shape or form. Technically things like werewolves are shapeshifters, but the term Protean refers to a human who can assume the form of other living things."
"So you're saying I could become a freaking tree if I wanted to?!" Raven asked incredulously.
"Well I don't know that yet estupida, all I know is that last night you turned into a maldito Cuervo and I'm trying to come up with a logical explanation as to why that happened!" He exclaimed in frustration, slamming his mug down on the coffee table. "Until you figure out how to control the whole changing thing we won't know for sure."
Raven rubbed her temples, trying to hold back the oncoming headache. "Come one, we'd better head to school." She sighed.
Corvin nodded stiffly and together they left the apartment.

Raven had never been one of those people that hated school, but as she walked the beaten path to Ellesmere High she felt a sense of dawning dread. The usual melodic sound of birds was shrill and unwelcome, a harsh reminder that she herself had been one of them last night.
