15: Thirsty People Waiting For Juice

After the movie, we decided it was best to call it a night.

I went to bed shortly after taking a shower and, of course, changing into my pajamas.  Lying down, I decided to take out my phone, which I had turned off for the day.  I tried to make this day at the mall a relaxing one with nothing to worry about.  When it turned on, though, I was surprised at how many missed calls and texts I had.  From Ethan I had ten missed calls and only one text.  However, Louis called me fifteen times and sent me six text messages.

I listened to Ethan's voicemails first.  Most of them were him yelling and screaming in anger that I didn't show up last night and they made me wince a few times. His texts were straight to the point, in all capital letters, threatening to break up with me.  I  wasn't sure what to respond with, so I didn't reply at all.  I figured that we should talk about this in person, not over the phone.

Then, my finger hovered over the calls from Louis.  I was reluctant to click on it, but I did anyway.  I braced myself for him calling me a weirdo or a creep.  I expected him to say that he didn't want to be friends anymore.  Someting like that.  But no.  What most of the voicemails said was that he had a lot of fun last night and we should do  it again some time.  The more recent ones sounded like he was worried about me since I hadn't picked up my phone all day, and he asked if I was okay.  His texts basically said the same thing.

I dialed Ethan's number, now ready to face this situation after a relaxing day at the mall - besides the fact that Jamie made me buy pretty much anything in sight.  It went straight to voicemail.  Groaning, I tried again.  And again.  And again.  Finally, I settled with just leaving him a voicemail.

"Hey, Ethan," I said in a small voice, "it's me, Wendy, your, uh, girlfriend.   I just wanted to say I'm sorry about last night.  But can we please talk about this in person?  I'll do anything you want.  I understand why you're mad, but I promise I'll make it up to you somehow.  I... I love you," and as I said the 'L' word, I had a vile taste in my mouth.  "Please, let's just talk about this, okay? During lunch tomorrow or something. Let me explain.  If you get this, please call me back." Then I hung up.

I sighed, and after brushing my teeth and changing into pajamas, collapsed onto my cozy bed, falling asleep.

The next day, Monday, I kept calling Ethan, only to be sent to voicemail each time. I eventually gave up shortly before my first class of the day.  I hadn't seen Louis all day, either, which was strange.  I guess I did scare him off.  God, I'm such an idiot. The day had gone by painfully slow, but it went by nonetheless.

By noon, I was behind the counter at 'The Thirst Quencher', making smoothies and taking people's orders.

"Have a nice day," I told the woman and two children that had just ordered. From behind me, I heard Niall's voice. "Hey, Wendy?  There's this, uh, party tonight, and, well-"

"Party?" The last party I'd ever gone to was about a year ago with Ethan and his...friends were there.  All they did was get drunk and high.  I was unconfortable to say the least.

"Well, birthday party to be precise..."

"Whose?" I asked, curious.

"Um, mine..?" He replied and my eyes widened.

"It's your birthday today? Oh my God, if I'd known I would've gotten you something." I immediately felt guilty, even though there's nothing I could have done.  II only found out about it right now. I'm not even that close with him and I wouldn't have known what to give him.  Louis would probably know... No.  I haven't even spoken to him in days.  I don't even know if we were clssified as friends anymore. Wait, were we even friends in the first place? Ugh, just thinking about him brings an unfamiliar feeling to me. I'm not really sure what that feeling is yet, but I think it's a good one.

"Nah, it's fine," He assured me. "So you wanna come?"

"I'd love to."

"Great!" He grinned a big, toothy grin. "Now, get back to work, Noble. There are thirsty people in line waiting for our juices."

I scrunched my nose at the way he worded that. "Oh my God what even?!" Niall just laughed, probably just now realizing how weird that sounded. I laughed with him and quickly got back to taking people's orders.
