"Bring you something from home?" Fred asked when we were sitting together in front of the segregation room.
"Tell Betty I'm in the hospital because I've fainted and ask her to bring me a few things." I smiled weakly at him. "I don't want to bother you, Fred"
"Alice, helping my friend is not a problem," he answered with a smile and touched my hand.
"I'm glad that you say so"
"Mrs. Smith, please follow me." A young doctor appeared in front of me.
"I'm going now," I nodded and stood up. I looked at Fred and smiled weakly. "Don't tell Betty anything about why I am here. I'm begging you, Fred, I want to tell her personally," I added, and he nodded. He hugged me tightly and kissed me on the cheek. "I won't say I will be as silent as a grave," he replied with a smile. "Thank you," I said and stepped back from him. "I'll be back as soon as I can." "Okay, Fred," I whispered and went to the doctor's side.

After two hours, I sat on the bed in the room. I read the book I found in my purse because I was very bored. I missed writing a newspaper article. My loneliness didn't last long because Betty went to my room a few minutes later. She came to me and hugged me tightly.
"I was so scared," she answered, and I stroked her hair.
"Don't worry. It's just routine research. Nothing serious," I lied and looked into her eyes. "Tomorrow I'm coming home," I added, and she nodded.
"Promise?" Betty grabbed my hand and I smiled.
"I love you, Betty," I whispered.
"I love you too, mom," she whispered back.
"Where's Fred?" I asked, and Betty seemed to be a bit confused. "Mr. Andrews stayed at home, but Mr. Jones is here. I was just in Whyte Wym when Mr. Andrews called us and told us where you are." Betty started to explain, but I stroked her hand.
"Okay, Betty, nothing happened, I'm glad you're with me. That's the most important thing" I smiled and tears appeared in my eyes.
"Maybe I will go and buy you something to drink in the café? You probably didn't drink anything and probably didn't eat. "Betty stood up from bed and I touched my stomach. I was indeed hungry.
"Thank you, Betty," I said.
"I'll be right back, mom" Betty left the room and I sighed heavily.
FP was here. I didn't want him to ever know that I was in the hospital. For me, the relationship between us was clear and I knew that we wouldn't have a future together.
"Fred told me about everything" FP went to my room and looked at me angrily.
"He told you about what?" I asked and rolled my eyes.
"About your results and biopsy"
"Good for you, FP. Now leave me alone"
"I know that you don't want me to leave"
"Oh, really?" I was tired and all I wanted was some sleep.
"Yes, Really"
"FP, what do you want? Everything between us is already explained. Nothing is left," I said quietly and looked at him. He sighed heavily and sat down in a chair next to my bed.
"I was afraid. I was afraid to admit to Sweet Pea, Toni and Cheryl that you're important to me, Alice." FP grabbed my hand and looked into my eyes. "I can't forgive myself." FP put my hand to his lips and kissed several times. "I feel so stupid, Al," he whispered, his voice cracked. I swallowed and closed my eyes. Tears flowed down my cheeks.
