Chapter 6: New Friends Part 1

Three weeks. It's been three weeks since I've talked to Grant. Rebe and Ava have been closer than ever and practically inseparable. Gemma has been MIA, spending most of her nights and weekends with Jax. So, here I am all by myself watching cat videos on Facebook. It was bittersweet seeing Laila board the plane back to California.

She stood up for me when no one else would at that party and she's been my rock this entire time. We've been facetiming and texting frequently which makes my time at school a little bit easier. Rebe and I are no longer speaking. It's been difficult but I can't have that kind of person in my life. Gemma and I are good but she's never around so, I only see her between classes. Ding! Ding!

"Hello?" I say answering the unknown number.

"Yo! It's Sloan. I got a new phone. Wanna hang?" Sloan asks randomly.

"Uh, sure! Where are you now? I can meet you somewhere." I say getting up from my bed, putting her on speaker, and changing out of my sweatpants.

"I'm actually outside your dorm. Meet me outside." She states, hanging up the phone.

I quickly grab my coat and purse and go downstairs. When I see Sloan, she's wearing a black chunky sweater with zebra printed leggings and gray converse. Her hair is lavender and up in a messy bun.

"Frosh! What's up?" Sloan asks giving me a half hug, taking me by surprise. She's not usually this warm and fuzzy.

"Not too much. It's been pretty boring actually." I say softly.

"Yikes. Well, let's get some food. I'm starving." She says looping arms with me and skipping.

She's very cheerful this afternoon. We decide to walk into town and go to Martello's Pizzeria. They have $3 slices for college students and the owners are a very sweet older couple. Mr. and Mrs. Martello have been in together for 30 years and been in business since 1987.

They have two sons and two daughters, who help out at the restaurant a few days a week. We order our slices and sit down at a booth near the back of the restaurant. I got pepperoni and Sloan got mushroom and spinach pizza.

"So, a lot of shit when down at homecoming. How are you holding up?" Sloan asks, picking off a mushroom and popping it into her mouth. I take a small bite of my slice and take a sip of Pepsi.

"Umm...I'm okay. I'm just trying to hold it together. It's hasn't been easy, you know?" I state quietly holding back tears. I've been very emotional these past few weeks and I just can't seem to shake it off.

"I get it. Ava's a fake bitch. She'll get her karma soon. Trust me." Sloan says putting her hand on mine briefly. "I still can't believe your roommate! Have you talked to her at all?"

"Yeah, I can't believe her either. I haven't spoken to her yet. I just can't do it. I barely see her anymore so, it hasn't been hard to avoid her. Even when I do see her, she just glares at me and leaves the room." I say plainly taking another bite of my pizza.

"What a jerk! Well, I got your back kid. I'm not gonna let those bitches tear you down." She states giving me a slight smile.

After we finish our food, we talk for a while about classes and upcoming movies. Sloan gets a text from her boyfriend Rider and finishes up her iced tea.

"Ugh, Rider wants me to meet him at the skatepark on Chester Street. You can come if you want. It's pretty boring but we can get ice cream on the way there!" She says excitedly, getting up from the booth and skipping to the door. "Thanks, Mr. M. You rock, man!" Sloan yells. Mr. Martello smiles and winks.

...

"Hey! Sloan, fancy seeing you here!" An English sounding guy with messy strawberry blonde runs towards us, giving Sloan a quick hug.

"Oh, hello! You must be...Elise, right?" He asks me holding out his hand.

I shake it and look at me, "Yes, and you must be...?"

"Adam Rogers II, very nice to meet you!" Adam says excitedly, smiling.

The skate park is a large park with benches and a wide walking path. There is a basketball court next to a small playground several feet away from the walking path. Towards the back entrance of the park is a skating pit for skateboarders and bikes. Sloan's boyfriend Rider is doing a complicated trick on his skateboard, while a girl sitting on the edge of the pit watches and claps enthusiastically.

"Dude! You really need to enter that competition next month!" She says to Rider, smiling from ear to ear.

"Nah. It's like 75 bucks to enter. I'd rather spend that money on my girl." He states getting off his skateboard and walking over to Sloan.

"Hey, babe. Nina's right! You should do the competition. You're not half bad!" Sloan says smirking.

They make out for a few seconds before Nina interrupts them.

"Sloan, who's your friend?" She asks pointing at me.

She stands up and walks over to us.

"Nina. Elise. Elise. Nina." Sloan says monotonously. "Her lame ass roommates are being weird so she's gonna hang with us now."

"Awesome! It'll be great to have a new girl in the group! Omg, do you like pink?!" Nina squeals jumping up and down. She's 4'11 with long dark wavy hair and olive skin. She's wearing glittery hot pink converse, with black leggings, and a hot pink puffer coat.

"Yeah, sure! Pink is a nice color," I say truthfully.

"Oh my gosh! I love you already! Pink is my favorite color of all time!" She squeals again.

There is no denying that she loves the color pink.

"Geez, Nina! Calm yourself and breathe." Adam says putting both hands on her shoulders.

They start doing synchronized yoga breathing exercises laying on the grass. I'm not sure if I should be excited to be in this group or terrified.
