Damn, there she is. I've been avoiding her for weeks and trying to figure out a way to get over her. I thought spending time with Britt would change how I feel. It's obviously not working. There's just something about Elise that I can't seem to forget. That night at Beta Tau party, was a disaster and the look on Elise's face when Ava said all of that shit, ripped me apart. I was so close to kissing her that night and now I just don't know what to do.
"Earth to Grant! Babe, what's up with you?" Britt huffs in frustration.
We're sitting at a booth a few tables away from Elise and her friend. I just can't stop looking at her. I can tell something's off with her and it's taking everything in me to not go over there. Sigh. I begin picking at my steak burrito.
"What do you think about that, Grant? Grant!" Jax asks snapping me out of my daze.
"Uh sure. Sounds great," I say unfazed.
"Really? So, you think I should shave off all of my hair then?" Jax laughs giving me a strange look.
"Um, what? No, don't do that. You'll look like Voldemort from Harry Potter," I joke trying to act normal.
"Ha. Ha. You got jokes. G, what's your deal? You okay?" He asks dipping three chips into guacamole and queso dip.
He misses his mouth and the chips fall into his lap. He curses under his breath.
"I'm fine. I'm just tired. I stayed up late studying for a marketing test so I'm a little out of it today," I say partially lying. I was studying late but that's not the reason.
"Okay, dude. Well, Gem and I are gonna head out. We have some stuff to do," Jax states, gathering up his trash.
Gemma's been oddly quiet the entire day. She takes out her phone and starts texting.
"Gem. Are you alright?" I whisper tapping the table.
"Yeah, I'm fine," She says without looking up from her phone.
She's not fine but I don't press her for answers.
"Gem, you ready?" Jax asks putting his hand on her shoulder.
"Hey! Can we come?" Britt asks excitedly, caressing my back awkwardly.
"NO!" Gemma shouts unexpectedly.
She gets up from the table and storms past Jax. Jax looks at me with wide eyes and put his hands up in frustration.
"I'll catch you later G," Jax says quickly before running out of the restaurant.
For a split second, Elise and I lock eyes. Her eyes are glassy as if she's on the verge of tears. She whispers something to her friend and they get up. I'm tempted to get up and talk to her but something stops me.
"Babe. Let's go to my room and watch a movie." Britt says in a seductive voice.
She runs her hand up my thigh but I push it away immediately. She pouts and starts kissing my neck. My eyes go wide and I push her away again. I look around for Elise but she's gone. Crap.
"Britt, I can't do this. I'm exhausted." I state trying to make an escape.
She pouts again and says, "Well, I could use a nap too. I'll come with you!"
"No, I'm good. I'd rather be alone, trust me." I begin to walk towards the exit.
I throw my trash away and Britt follows me out.
"Well, I'll see you in class. Bye." I say quickly walking away from her.
"Wait, Grant! What about my hug?" She shouts glaring at me. I give her a weird look and run back to my room.
I plop down on my bed and check my phone. I see the words "Incoming text from Elise..." flash on my screen.
Elise "Hi..."
Me: "Hey. What's going on?"
Elise: "You tell me..."
Me: "What do you mean? Are you okay?"
Elise: "Just dandy. You know what I mean. 👫"
Me: "Oh, right. Britt's just a friend. Nothing more. I promise!"
Elise: "...She looked like more than a friend to me but whatever."
Me: "I...I can explain that. She's...We're not dating. Besides, I like you."
No response. Shit. I really screwed this up.
...
"Yo, G!" Jax shouts from across the football field.
We just finished up soccer practice for the night. We only have another game left until we end for the season.
Christmas break is two weeks away so, this last game is our last chance to make an impression. If we win, we get this huge regional plaque in our honor. It's a pretty big deal.
"What's up, bro?" I ask, sitting on the grass, taking off my cleats.
"So...something is up with Gem and I need your help?" He asks shifting his weight from one foot to the other.
He looks disheveled and nervous.
"Sure. Anything. What do you need?" I ask, wiping the sweat off of my forehead.
"200 bucks. I know it's a lot. I'll pay you back though," Jax picks his nails nervously.
"200 bucks! Dude...that's a lot of money on a broke college student budget!" I chuckle trying to lighten the mood.
"I know but it's not for nothing. It's important, G. I wouldn't have asked if It wasn't," Jax sighs in defeat. "If you don't have it. It's fine. I'll figure something out."
"Wait. Wait. I got you, bro. I have a little money saved up from my summer job. Just tell me when you need it by." I say reassuringly.
It's not every day, your best bud asks you for money.
"Thanks, G. I'll pay you back, I promise. I gotta run but I'll hit you up later!" Jax states in a hurry.
He runs off the field and disappears into the night. I have no idea what is going on between Jax and Gemma but it's weird.
Jax usually tells me everything so, keeping secrets is not like him at all. I guess the truth will come out eventually.
