The Resistance

I opened my eyes to find myself in a warehouse, lying on a cot.  My body was still weak from the attacks, but at least I was alive.

"Where am I?" I asked aloud.

"You're at the Resistance HQ," said a voice.

I quickly sat up, surprised by an answer to my question.  Only to find that silver hedgehog from the city standing next to my cot.

"Who the hell are you?" I growled jumping out of my cot, keeping him at a distance, "Why am I here?"

"It's alright, my name is Silver," calmed the silver hedgehog, "We found you roughed up pretty badly and brought you to our headquarters to heal you."

I calmed myself down a bit, remembering the attack in the city.  The monsters raining down on us and it was Zero leading them.

"What about the monsters?  The city?  Did you find Zero?"  I asked almost frantically.

"The monsters are all old enemies of ours; Chaos, Zavok, Metal Sonic, and Shadow," explained Silver, "The one who leads them seems able to summon them at will.  You were lucky to make it out with just bruises, all four of them are heavy hitters."

"What about the city?  Who else made it out?" I asked.  Silver seemed hesitant, but pushed for answers, "Others had to have made it out of that!"

"I'm afraid by the time we arrived, the damage was already done," Silver said, "You were the only one we found alive."

"No, your lying," I growled as tears started to form.  Silver's eyes wavered only confirming what I was trying to deny, "No."  My knees collapsed to the ground.  Silver walked over and knelt beside me.

"I'm sorry, I wish I could have made it there sooner," he said placing his hand on my shoulder, "I'll give you a moment alone, when your ready I'll introduce you to The Commander, he wants a word with you."

"No, I'll see him now," I said forcing myself to stand.

"There's no rush, if you want to take some time to absorb everything," assured Silver.

"I'm fine," I growled, "There's no point in dwelling in the past.  I'm not the type to drown myself in sorrow.  What good does it do anyone?  Now where's the Commander?"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Silver guided me through the headquarters, until we came to a large room.  The room had multiple large computer screens showing different parts around the world.  In the center was a small table, that had a laptop on it.  By the large computer screens, stood a red echidna.

    "Knuckles," called out Silver.

"Silver?" asked the echidna, "I wasn't expecting you till later."

"I know, but she was determined to speak with you now," explained Silver.

"I see, the lone survivor," acknowledged Knuckles, "I'm sure you have questions."

"Silver answered most of them," I explained, "My only question is did you find the one responsible?"

"All we know about him, is that he's able to summon enemies in massive numbers," explained Knuckles, "And everywhere he goes, destruction follows.  One of the first responders, Sonic couldn't even defeat him."

"Why does that name sound familiar?" I muttered.

"Because it should," said Knuckles as Silver went over to the laptop to display a blue hedgehog on one of the screens, "Sonic has been a hero to everyone.  Defeating Eggman and other forces time and time again.  That it until now.  Now it's up to us.  I know you just got back on your feet, but we'd really appreciate it if you join us."

"You don't even know me," I said, "And you would let me be apart of your Resistance, just like that?"

"This war affects everyone," explained Knuckles, "If we're going to beat the one who took down Sonic, we're going to need all the help we can get.  I can tell that you've got experience in the field too.  Not many of our recruits can say the same.  So what do you say?"

I took a moment to think it over.  All I wanted to do is find Zero and stop him, but I'm not sure how far I'll get on my own.  After what happened when I confronted him the last time, going out on my own isn't the best idea.  For now, joining these guys might be my best option.

"Alright, I'm in," I nodded.

"Great! I'm happy to hear that," smiled Knuckles, "Silver will show you to your quarters, meet back here in a few hours for our meeting and I'll introduce you to everyone."

Back then my only thought was stopping Zero from destroying himself.  I never thought for a second that the memories and the adventures I would gain here, would be the ones that would stick with me.
