When the car pulled up outside the building, my face dropped. I guess this place matched the description though; old and creepy. It was just coming up to 7 o'clock in the evening when I got out of the car. The humidity hit me suddenly and made me feel instantly sick. Arizona was definitely nothing like England.
I walked to the back of the car and the driver assisted me with my bags and when I walked back to the front of the car he followed. I offered him some of the money my parents had given me, but he insisted I keep it and simply said "I appreciate the offer, but after knowing you all these years, I couldn't possibly take that from you, Tam" He gave me a small smile. Our family had known Derek for almost 14 years now and he was considered a member of the family. He didn't fly over here with me as he was already in the country on a business trip, so he just picked me up from the airport. He was a chauffeur, which may give you the impression that we're rich or at least have enough money in our pockets to afford someone to drive us around everywhere, but trust me, we don't. It's just because he's a family friend that he offers to take us places, which really comes in handy, but we always offer he the money for the journey, though he always insists we keep it.
Derek turned round to look at me. "Well Tam, I guess this is it then".
"Yeah, I guess so" I replied.
"Everything's going to be fine, you know that don't you?" he told me.
"I really do hope so" I said with tears threatening to escape from my eyes.
He gave me a hug and waved as he got back in the car.
"It'll all be fine, you'll see" He said as he drove away.
I watched as he drove through the gates and then turned my attention back to the building as I began to walk towards it. I felt really awkward as I tried to make my way towards the building with all my bags. I had my guitar in my one hand, my rucksack on my back while I wheeled my suitcase behind me. The worst part was that this school had a hell of a lot of windows so who knows how many people could be laughing at me through their windows right now? I finally got to the door when things got more awkward, I really struggled to open the door and walk through but the most annoying part was that there were people inside that could've easily helped me by holding the door but they were obviously too ignorant.
I half fell through the door into the building and tried my best to ignore the few people staring at me as I made my way to the lady behind the desk. This place really was like some kind of grand hotel. The part of the building I was in now was like a hotel lobby, it had a marble floor, a high ceiling and large chandeliers. There were people sat on sofas talking to each other - everyone looked so at home and I felt so out of place. To my far right there was a corridor and I could see that there were paintings hanging on the wall. On my far right was a staircase, it was huge. They were the type of stairs that when you reach the top of the first set, you can either go left or right up some more stairs. I'd never been anywhere like this before.
"Ah, you must be Tamara Holloway our new student?" The lady behind the desk said. I didn't have time to reply before she added. "Here is the key to your room and if you'd like to follow John he'll show you where it is" She gestured towards a tall skinny guy wearing some sort of uniform. He walked over and took my suitcase for me, but I assured him I could manage carrying my guitar - I was rather protective over it. As I took the key from the woman at the desk she also added. "I'm Lisa by the way, the schools receptionist. If you have any queries at all regarding your room, I'm the one you should come to" She smiled.
"Thank you" I smiled back. I began to follow John as he walked away but stopped when Lisa spoke again "Oh and Tamara, when you've found your room and dropped off your luggage, could you come back down here in around an hour? There is someone who I'm sure would like to meet with you" I nodded as I continued to follow John up the grand staircase. I imagined it was the head teacher that wanted to see me and that made me nervous and I wondered how much she knew about me already. When we reached the top of the stairs I couldn't help but look over my shoulder at the reception area. It was so big.
