Puck
Dalton surprises me at lunch by sitting by me. I usually sat alone to read, not that I had any friends to sit with anyway. He plops down beside me; at table seven, and chows down on his cafeteria food. I scrunch my nose at him, "You eat like a pig." I say.
"You look like a pig," he drums. His eyes are irritatingly amused and there's a splotch of ketch up on his chin. I grab a napkin and smack it against his chest.
"It's called manners. You should try em' sometime." I sneer. I try to ignore him and go back to my book rocking our "baby's" car seat with my foot.
"What are you reading?" He asks taking my book out of my hands. I breath through my nose and snatch it back from his prying fingers.
"Maximum Ride." I put the book in my bag. Fang would have to wait. Dalton plucks his fingers against the table and scans his eyes across the cafeteria. I look where his eyes are pointing and see Christian staring at us. "What's his problem?" I snort. Why were people looking at me today?
Dalton shrugs, grinning to himself and waves at Christian. I sigh in frustration. The staring was really starting to wear on my nerves. My phone beeps and I turn away from Dalton.
Hope you're having a good day. - Noah
I breathe a sigh of relief and shut the text. I gather up my stuff slinging my bag over my shoulder, carrying the stupid baby carrier on my left arm. No wonder mothers have such toned forearms. This thing is freaking heavy.
I don't get far before Dalton catches up, I stop whipping around to meet his intrusive gaze. "Dalton I know you don't give a shit about this assignment so whatever you're doing, just stop." He feigns hurt, placing a hand over his heart. "I'm hurt babe. Don't you know I just want to take care of our precious love child?" He pats the "baby's" tuft of hair before wiping his palm on his jeans.
"You're an idiot." I remark.
"And you love it." He singsongs.
Yeah, I love you about as much as a rabbit loves being prey to a prowling fox.
Dalton takes the baby carrier out of my arm and loops it on his own, "So I'm thinking we should take turns with the baby. We can start at my house and then go to your house."
I give him a sharp look. "We?" He nods pulling his hair back to loop it in a half up half down doe. I might have found it attractive if he wasn't such a cotton headed ninny muggins.
He nods smiling, and I notice he has two small black gages in his ears. I hoped they hurt. "Yeah, like one night we'll stay at my place and the next we'll stay at yours."
My heart thuds around in my chest for a minute, "Dalton, we are not staying the night at each others houses." He makes a face at me and dumps the carrier back on my arm.
"You'll change your mind, Puck." He kisses my forehead and walks away. I scrub the spot glaring at his muscular back as he walled with undeniable swagger. Rolling my eyes, I make my way to the only class I have with Noah and sit in front of him. He slides his hand over my braid, but says nothing.
I relax under his touch and sigh. Noah compared to Dalton made me feel safe. A single day spent with Dalton only reminded me how damaged we both were. It was kind of sad.
A dark haired girl gives me a sneer and I snap my teeth at her. She looks away and I groan in frustration leaning my head on my elbow.
It's gonna be a long day, I think as I rock my baby's carrier with my foot.
The class drags on, but I'm grateful for the distraction. In middle of class the professor steps out leaving the smart board running off her phone.
A group in the back of the class are all laughing looking at one phone and glancing at a girl named Marni. She was tiny, one of those girls you are always patting on the head and carrying heavy bags for.
Christian locks the door and unplugs the teachers cord plugging his own in cuasing whatever he is looking at to be broadcast out to the entire room.
It was a clearly photoshopped picture of Marni. Her cute little face plastered on the lingerie draped, seductive nun holding a whip and shackles.
Marni's face turns beat red as the entire class laughs. Her eyes well up with big tears and my stomach churns. I stand up stalking over to Christian. He eyes me up and down smirking. I smile at him before taking his phone and shattering it against the floor.
The entire class goes silent and Christian is twitchimg with fury. "You're such a bitch."
I shrug, and turn back seeing Noah sitting next to Marni. He takes her tiny hand in his and talks to her in low tones. I smile glad that he was doing the reassurance part.
I was no good at the mushy stuff.
Getting angry and defending them sure. I turn to walk back to my seat when Christian grabs my shoulder forcing me to look at him.
"You think he cares about you?" He jerks his head over at Noah and Marni.
I grab his wrist and dig my nails in as hard as I can. "You will let go of me, right now." My voice is low but Christian laughs a little gripping my shoulder so hard I know there will be bruises.
"Why Puck? You scared?" He grabs my hip digging in and then the panic is real and I feel my vision turn red.
Suddenly Christian is keeled over gripping himself and moaning. "If you ever touch me again I will kill you." I hiss. Noah is next to me now pulling me back to my seat.
The entire class is quiet aside from Christians whimpering. He's just lucky I hadn't buried my fingers two knuckles deep in his eyeballs. Marni gives me a small smile and I nod in return trying to contaim the panic.
Noah traces my spine with his index finger and I feel more in control and calm under his touch. The bell rings and I'm thankful to be gone for the day. Noah walks me out and scours the halls for someone pulling me a little closer. I'm struggling to carry the stupid baby carrier and am surprised when Noah takes it from me.
"You didn't have to do that." I tell him.
His eyes soften when he looks at me and smiles causing my breath to catch in my throat. "I know.
He hoisted the carrier up higher on his hip and interlaced his fingers in mine. We walked to his truck in mutual silence. I grabbed the backward baseball cap off his head and slapped it facing forward onto my own head. He looked at me with an adoring expression and I blush. "You're beautiful." He says bringing our interlaced hands up inbetween us to rest my hand flat against his chest so I could feel he heart. He reluctantly let's me go to strap in the carrier in the back seat.
I have sudden visions of he and I with children. A little girl sleeping in his arms, her little feet hanging from around him her head snuggled into his shoulder. A curly headed toddler holding his hand and I holding the toddlers hand on his other side.
I wanted that life with him so badly in that moment.
