I opened my eyes and stared at the roof of the tent.
It has been almost a month since 'the shit hit the fan' as we've been calling it. We have been doing well so far, I mean no ones died and we were doing alright for food. Me, Merle and Daryl go hunting a few days a week and Glenn and a few others have done a few runs into the city. Each time they tell us they barely make it back alive. Apparently the city is over run by the dead. I don't really know what to call them, the others call them geeks and Daryl and Merle just call them the first curse word that comes into their heads.I've seen a few out hunting but no where near as many as in the city. I have only killed one so far. I hesitated at first but as my brothers keep reminding me, they are not people, and their right.
I've been trying to get along with everyone at camp but it has proven to be difficult especially when it comes to the likes of Ed. I'm not alone in my disliking towards him, Merle and Daryl feel the same. Ed is just like our dad, an abusive asshole.
Somehow though I've managed to swallow my hate and avoid him at all costs. I wish I could say the same for Merle though. I'm pretty sure he's argued with everyone here, even little Carl.Daryl's had a few arguments too but he spends most of his time out hunting. He doesn't really like being around anyone. I on the other hand have actually grown quite close to some of the people here. Me and Glenn are good friends, I even tried to teach him how to shoot a crossbow. He was terrible but it was fun to watch him try. I like most of the women here too but I don't really fit in since I'm the youngest. I don't mind though I either just go hunting with my brothers or have a deep chat with Dale on top of the RV.
I sat up slowly and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. I turned to see that neither of my brothers were in the tent. I stood up and put the same mud stained jeans on that I had been wearing since the highway, then the plain white top that Carol washed for me and finally the leather jacket that my brothers saved up for and got me for Christmas. I loved that jacket. It made me feel like my brothers were with me even if they weren't. Like right now.
I made my way out and saw that most people were already up. I looked around and saw Merle was heading over to me.
"Hey," he said smiling. "Me and some of the others are heading out on a run to the city." He said while nodding in the direction of the truck where Glenn, Jacqui, T-dog and Morales were stood waiting."Oh okay." I replied worried. There was always the chance that he wouldn't come back which made me feel sick to my stomach. I don't know if I could cope without my oldest brother. I'm pretty sure he noticed because he then said, "For God sakes don't go worrying bout me you idiot I'll be fine."
Merle was never very good at reassuring or showing any kind of affection. I smiled at him and he turned to walk of to the truck.
"Wait! Merle where's Daryl?!" I shouted over to him.
"He's out huntin', he'll be back tomorrow," he replied before getting into the truck. Glenn got in behind him but smiled over to me and waved which I returned before heading over to talk to Lori and Carl."Hey Carl." I said when he came running over to me. He lifted his fist and I lifted mine and we did our secret handshake which we spent almost a whole day coming up with. I smiled at Lori before I went and sat down with them. We chatted for a while with Carol, Sophia and Amy while eating our delicious breakfast of canned tuna. Shane soon came over though and then him and Carl went down to the quarry to catch frogs.
Lori then turned to me and said "Thanks for making friends with Carl. He really needed someone to help take his mind of his dad."
I smiled and her and let her know it was no problem. I had really grown to love little Carl, I treated him like he was my little brother.
Then Lori and the others headed down to the quarry and I went over to chat with Dale for my daily life lesson. Merle and Daryl found Dale annoying but I loved him. He had so many interesting stories to tell and he was almost like the loving dad I never had.
